Non seafarers, tell us what you think.
I looked at the visitor section to our site and there are lots of them, some may have been to sea and probably a lot haven't. I thought it would be interesting for some of them to give their opinions on our experiences at sea. We all know that what what we chat about is just a matter of fact. I wonder if they think 1. Are they telling the truth or 2. I really wish I had done that.

Re: Non seafarers, tell us what you think.
Probably think we are akin to popeye the sailorman. I have always said if you told a shore person some of the stories about what happened at various times, they would think you were shooting them a line. I never bothered trying to converse, they had different standards, lived in a different world, and in most cases looked down their nose at you. Whenever we used to meet up ashore (from the same ) company for a night in Newcastle or wherever, we used to make a pledge to leave the ships in the water, and concentrate on the evening in hand, like Brian and his nights in the Rex hotel in Whitley Bay, didn't like telling him about some of his conquests there as probably knew them. Especially if he got along to the Avenue pub further along the sea front, which is there no longer. Seamen even these days seem to stick to their own groups. Cheers John Sabourn

Re: Non seafarers, tell us what you think.
I worked a nine to five job in an office for 18 months before I went to sea and hated every minute of it , I remember in Liverpool seamen were not too much liked and people somewhat looked down on them ,some Judge or polititian called us the scum of the earth , and being seamen we said that one of us must have got his daughter in the family way ,after some years at sea I used to feel sorry for the shoresiders working nine to five . and liked coming home but after a couple of weeks I yearned to get back . so it was off too the pool for a new adventure .our life aboard was hard work but it was a simple way with everything laid out for us and not living paycheck to paycheck ,cig issue beer issue ,and a sub in port .aaah those were the days .I,m off for a bevie tarar.

Re: Non seafarers, tell us what you think.
I once heard a couple of women talking in Liverpool many years ago,
one said, `Hows that lad of yours getting on, Mary`.
Mary said, `He`s alright now, He doesnt work anymore , he goes away to sea now, he said he gets Sunday dinners every day.`
`Oooh that sounds nice, he has done well for himself.`

After returning from a voyage, all sweetness and joy- when you arrived downstairs for breakfast after a few days and instead of a fry-up on your plate, your discharge book was lying there- time for a trip down to the pool.
