RMS Saxonia
Hi Jim,I was in the Sea Cadets and spent most of my time down the Liverpool Docks.I was fourteen at the time and the Saxonia was in the Gladstone prior to its maiden voyage. She was the first of that type of class so I went aboard to have a look around.Whilst I thought yes it was ultra modern but after having been on all the old liners I thought there was no competition between the old and the new.I did my first trip on the France, the first class saloon and public rooms had far more atmosphere than the new Empress's.
This was at the time of Contempory style when everyone ripped out the big black iron grates and replaced them with the "Modern Grate" those horrible tiled things, people pay a fortune now for the old cast iron grates.
Regards.
Jim.B.
