Thanks for this post John, it is important that we remember all those brave men who sailed the seas at that time.
    Thank you.

Sad thing Des but much of our war time history will be lost.
History as it is taught concerns mainly with major conflicts with armed services.
The 'Wavy navy' as it was often refed to may not get such recognition.
So all efforts by any of us to preserve the history is paramount.

John the term 'Navy Wavy' was never a term used for the Merchant Navy, the term 'Wavy Navy'refers to those members of the RNVR who served in the Royal Navy and were usually ex Merchant Seamen and whose lower arm stripes of position of rank within the RN were wavy stripes on the cuff rather than straight stripes on the cuff. Ex members of the RN who were not compulsory called up and who were members of the RNR wore the normal straight stripes of rank.

    For non serving members
    RNVR Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve
    RNR Royal Navy Reserve

I was RNVR at one time in my non-illustrious career.
You could be a member of the RNVR as a non Merchant Seamen but you would have had peacetime (and wartime) bouts of service on RN ships or RN shore establishments

    Just an observation
