As I remember, I had to hand in my red I.D. Card at the pool in return for my National Insurance card when I came ashore. I have my Dis book but never saw my ID card again.

    Hi Duke
Although i had lost my ID and Disc Book , i had the Green ID Card at the time, my late Brother likewise.
I recall that he was able to keep both Book and ID Card when we left the Merchant Navy, however things could have well changed?

Why i recall this was because when we went to join the Foreign Legion , he had his Book and Card and i did not , so when we were taken in for the Interview i was questioned as to why i did not have any ID. Of course there wasnt much drama after i just told them that i had lost them on the way over from Dover ( A little lie LOL) but they said OK.
I had actually lost it in a different way that i wasnt going to tell them, my secret LOL

    Hi Ivan.
I have an American crewman's landing certificate for New Orleans dated Nov18 1953 but there is no picture just all my details, perhaps being an all Welsh crew they didn't think we could hide anywhere, the accents would stand out.

Still have somewhere in the house my discharge book and Seamans identity card, red covered.
No one attempted to take it from me at any time and do not recall an y one giving me a NHS card in exchange.

I know I had problems with the Tax Office as they claimed I had not paid enough tax at one time, I wrote back and said tell that to the shipping company not me.
Never heard any mote about it.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
