    Default Tom

Hi I am ex Merchant Navy joined in 1968 at Gravesend I only served a short time but still have fond memories.

I am on holiday in Barbados and this week speaking to an old local guy who bought and sold antiques, I found a very small silver `cup` 2- 3" bearing the details `Clan Line Golf Club- Cayzer Challenge Cup` presented to ` J Stang - 1932`. He tells me he bought a ob lot of bric a brac in Montreal, Canada many years ago and this is one of the batch still left, so I rescued it.

I am currently researching the golf aspect but can anyone give me any background to the information on the `trophy cup` the golf section or members from that era or identify `J Strang`.

please contact me either thro` site or below e mail address

    1981

By 1981 the last of the Clan Line vessels were sold as a new breed of cargo carrier, the container ship, was introduced which made the operation of small cargo vessels un-competitive. However with the demise of Clan Line a remnant of the company, Cayzer Irvine, continued to manage ships until 1987 when the Cayzer family sold their holding in British & Commonwealth. After that Cayzer Irvine was renamed CI Shipping Ltd and continued to manage ships until 1988.

I am a fairly new member to this site and I am still ploughing through various posts.
Cayzer Irvine Shipping replaced Cayzer Irvine and Company Limited in 1981 and in 1986 was rebranded as C.I. Shipping. In 1992 in association with Safmarine as equal partner they founded Pellmore Ltd.
The new company would embrace the ship management of both companies. C.I. shipping was then placed in Dormancy.
On the 6 November 1992 Pellmore management, as a vehiclefor the pending aquisition, changed the name to Ci-SAF Shipping Ltd and after a management buy out changed the name to London Ship Managers.
Whilst operating as Cayzer Irvine Shipping and C.I. shipping the company managed the reefer ships of Da Nadi of Italy

I think your research will bear fruit if you delve into the history of Ralston Golf Club in Refrew Scotland.
The club was opened in 1904 by Sir Charles and Lady Cayzer. I would not be at all surprised if an annual competition was dedicated to them and a trophy donated by the Cayzers.
Go to page 15 of this document and you will find mention of the trophy:

    Hope this helps

Interesting Chris, I never knew of the Cayzer connection to Ralston GC but was there many times in the 70's whilst still with the company as my Auntie was the lady's captain, so it was great to see her in the picture of all the ladies captains from 1953! Bobby Bell is still, at 90, an intrepid soul and is flying down to Plymouth next weekend for my daughters wedding. At least she won't be like her brother, Eric Wood ex BI and Aden HM, who insisted on me taking him out for a round at Lostwithiel...aged 92!!

    Hope the reunion went well.
