#11 Believe it or not Mike you might be surprised by how many chief mates when taking their morning or evening star sights , and previous to working out their approx. position in the heavens used to go out on the wing of the Bridge sextant all set at the approx altitude , and all sing the same little ditty to themselves “ Twinkle Twinkle little star , how I wonder where you are ? , behind the awning spar, ! Come out you Basket “.

    Hi John.
I ha my doubts about some of them when I saw them twirling around the bridge with a sextant in hand, now I know.

#13 Well Des as you know in the wire splicing world the word was “ worm and parcel with the lay, turn and serve the other way”, the mates pointer to other stars and their expected position might have been Castor and Pollux and when he couldn’t find them maybe it may have seemed strange when swirling around the bridge shouting maybe “ I’ve lost my cast iron bollicks. Thus from that day onwards the heavenly twins were thus described. The swirling was maybe due to being on a UCL vessel and trying to see who was behind him.,Cheers JS…..

We had a Chief officer who many thought was that way inclined. Thankfully never had to do a watch.
But had the officers steward in charge as his personal steward, the steward was as gay as a nine bob note.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
