The Seamans Mission Cardiff

Looking at family records I have my maternal grandfather as manager of the Seamans mission in Cardiff. This would have been from circa 1939 to just after end of the war. He had been a merchant seaman and also a naval reservist but in 1938 he was admitted to a TB hospital and never went to sea again. He eventually succumbed to the disease in the late 1940s. I was wondering if anybody can add anything about the mission or how he acquired the job. He and my relatives lived in the mission but when he became ill again they all became homeless.

I joined my first ship in Cardiff in 49, and went to the Seaman's Mission there, but can't remember anything about it other than to write a letter home.

Is the mission in question the Flying Angel or the Catholic Mission ? Used to be the difference was the Flying Angel was a dry ship, and the Catholic Mission sold beer. so maybe the Catholic Mission tended to get more customers , those are my memories . The Catholic Mission In B.A. a Saturday night dance there, the padre insisted you attend the dance you also had to attend his service beforehand regardless of your faith. Also a no no to leave the Mission with a girl in tow, they were seen home in their bus. Any trysts had to be arranged outside the Mission. He was a strong believer in any sexual contact was for procreation not recreation . Cheers JS.

Seamans Mission here in Melbourne was dry when I first came here in 64.
Now has a very good bar, popular with all who go there.

My grandfather was James Anthony Jones, born 7-11-1913 The address for the mission was Butetown in Cardiff

Hi Christopher,
Sorry, don't know anything about the mission. Your g/f joined the MN in 1932 ss DALWORTH. He has a CR1 and a CR2 card which you may or may not have. He enrolled in the RNR in 1935 for his first 5 year term but is unable to complete same due to being unfit for further service in 1938.

If anybody can post my grandfather’s CR1 and 2 I would be very grateful. I believe that some contained a photograph of the holder. I never met my grandfather and I have never seen a photograph of him and would be very keen to see it.
