Appeal-trace a relative-Robert Garvin Scott
Hello everyone.
I am a new member and came across this website when I was searching Ancestry for one of my wife's Uncles.( I find the website very interesting and informative).
His name is Robert Garvin Scott born 6th April 1916 in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear.
He joined the Merchant Navy at the outbreak of WW2 in 1939. He was discharged from the merchant navy in June 1943 because of burn injuries, his discharge number is R210885.
I applied to the National Archives for his CRS10 but discovered that his was destroyed in a fire. The records they sent me indicated that he had applied for a new one because of this fire.
The paperwork they sent me suggests that he was badly burnt and injured in a fire on 12/12/1942 at Saint Johns, Newfoundland.
I searched the internet and came across a news story that told of a fire that broke out at the Knights of Columbus Hostel whereby 100 people lost their lives and a further 90 were injured. I believe Robert was one of these injured persons.
The hostel was built there for the use of all service men who were stationed there for any reason during the war.
Alas, I can find no other record of Robert's injuries or how he got back to England.
Can anyone help?

Re: Appeal-trace a relative-Robert Garvin Scott
Robert Garvin Scott lived at 58 Vine Street, South Shields, when he was discharged in 1943. Previous to that he lived in Queens Road, Jarrow, at the time of his marriage in 1939 to Dorothy McLean.
I did receive a copy of his pouch from the National Archives. However this pouch did not include records of his medals which I had previously found on the Ancestry website.
Many thanks for your replies to date.

Re: Appeal-trace a relative-Robert Garvin Scott
Seaman, s Pouches are a hit and miss most times, just giving basic Details, that is why one needs the CRS10 or other depending on the dates and Services. eg; CR10 CR1 CR2 etc!

Re: Appeal-trace a relative-Robert Garvin Scott
The National Archives were unable to supply me with Robert's CRS10 although they did not give me a reason. I thought this item was something like a passport which listed his service on the ships on which he served. I presumed that this was destroyed in the fire at Newfoundland.
The N.A. took six months to reply to my request due to problems associated with Covid-19.

Re: Appeal-trace a relative-Robert Garvin Scott
Thanks Marian, I will once again try the NA for a copy of Robert’s CRS10. I will let you know in due course the result. Your help is much appreciated. How did you find the newspaper articles? Is there a website somewhere to do this?

Re: Appeal-trace a relative-Robert Garvin Scott
Hello again Marian, Sorry for not replying to you sooner but I have been away on holiday and have not had access to wi fi. Thank you very much for your reply and finding the ship on which Robert came back to England. How do you find all this information? I would much appreciate if you could send me the newspaper article you were referring to and in particular the photograph of Robert as we do not have one. Once again thank you very much for your help.
