Family research
I am hoping you might be able to help me in my family research.I read with interest your account of the reunion of the cadets from the MV OTAIO,in Liverpool .One of those cadets was a Robert Hughes. Is it possible for you to ask him if he was a passenger on the Rangitata that sailed from Wellington arriving Southhampton 13/02/1958.Its just possible he might be one of my long lost reatives.
Regards Robert Hughes

Welcome!
Hi Robert
There is an Inwardds passenger listing at the NA at Kew for 1958
This may well cover what you want,if you dont get any other answers!
Cheers

Regarding the search for the family member Robert Hughes ,I am sure he died from an infectious wound to the neck aboard a ship in Hong Kong called the "Batu Pahat" in 1960

A slim chance
There was a Robert Hughes attended a pre sea course at South Shields marine school 1952/1953. A lot of the lads went to the bigger companies. However he would not have been a cadet in 1958 as would have completed his time. John Sabourn

Thanks for your reply,The thing I am curious about ,is why would a seaman go as a passenger back the uk, could he have been on a ship delivery to New Zealand.
I know that this is my relative, because of the uk address he gave the shipping company.
Kind Regards Robert Hughes

Robert Hughes
The Robert Hughes that I think I remember was more than likely from the NE coast. and would have been about 76 if still alive. There is a Lecturer at South Shields Marine College on this site, maybe they have records going back that far. This was at the old youth hostel at Prince Edward Road in South Shields which was utilized at the time for pre sea students. The head of this department was Capt. Moore a long time dead now.
