Post card from panama: The new locks

The 3,000-passenger Carnival Splendor also passed through. Previously, unable to use the old Locks, that same ship had to make 40-night cruises completely around continental South America when she was being "re-positioned" from East and West Coast. But in April, the same 113,000-ton ship did it all -- from Tampa to Los Angeles -- in 18 days.
Cruise lines have been just about running to sign-up for passages through the new, wider, bigger, better locks in the Panama Canal. The 118-ft wide Caribbean Princess as an example -- and with 3,000 excited passengers aboard -- just squeezed through last month. Then, Disney could not be left out and so their Disney Wonder passed through followed by the 4,000-bed Norwegian Bliss. "Passengers like the added excitement of something new, something to tell friends & neighbors," added one cruise director.
