Christian Kloster was a member of Norway's Kloster family, the shipowners that owned Norwegian Caribbean Lines. I met him during a cruise to the Bahamas on the little Sunward II back in Feb 1983.
We had a long chat. He recalled how, in the '70s, NCL wanted to expand -- to far bigger ships. They looked at the laid-up United States and then the laid-up Michelangelo & Raffaello. Yes, there was some potential. But a trip to Le Havre and a visit to the idle France changed everything -- clinched the deal. He said the former French Line flagship was just perfect for their plans. Of course, the France became the highly successful Norway following her 1979-80 conversion.
