November 22nd 1961: Fifty-five years ago on this day, I sailed from New York on my first voyage -- a cruise over Thanksgiving weekend on the German liner Hanseatic. It was a gift from my grandmother. And what a gift -- I was hooked forever. Going to sea, aboard a liner, the floating city, faraway places.

    That is my old ship.
The `EMPRESS OF SCOTLAND`, of CPR, She had Three Funnels then. Built in 1930
She was built as EMPRESS OF JAPAN for the Vancouver Japan/China trade and was the fastest ship on the Pacific, she was the last ship out of Singapore as the Japs were entering the city, and then her name was changed to Empress of Scotland. I was on her after the strike in 1955 and then she was sold to the germans at the end of that season. A great ship then.
She was burned out in New York 1966 and then scrapped.
    Cheers
    Brian.

    Vernon,
Out of curiosity when did you start your sea career there's no list of your ships and dates. I always thought you started in the late 1950's

    Hello JAE
I think as most here know JAE I started in 1958 with UCL,and as I have also posted before was not a long spell due to my own silly mistakes in life, but the time I did spend was most memorable and enjoyable, got me out in the World as a young Lad (like most here) and taught me a lot!

there's no list of your ships and dates.

There is indeed JAE like many many others in the Crew Listing! As is my late Brothers

#4, Hi Doc, I think it takes a "big man" to stand up and admit his mistakes and then go on to learn from them and
still come out on top, hats off to you. Wishing you and yours a very merry Christmas and a happy healthy 2017.
    All the Best JC

    Hello John F
Thank you for that, and yes I did learn to do the right thing in life after all!

Had a rather topsy turvy life ,with lots of hazards but managed one way or the other!
Paid my debt to Society in one way or the other!

Stories of my past are various and may one day yet make a Book who knows!
But that's in the future maybe long long distance future! LOL

But as they say you do learn by your errors! Well some do!??

    Vernon,

What was confusing me was that in your post 1# you implied that it was your first trip in 1961, that's all.
