Eighty years ago this week, the illustrious, heroic & beloved Queen Mary arrived in New York on her maiden voyage from Southampton. The ship had a huge welcome in the harbor: tugs, fireboats, spectator craft & planes overhead. Whistles, horns & sirens sounded almost continuously. Even the great skyscrapers seemed to bow, curtsies in fact, to the new Cunard flagship. It was the beginning of 31 years with Cunard and nearly 50 years being moored at Long Beach, California as a museum, hotel and setting for shops & restaurants.

Thanks Doc for posting that. Went and enjoyed the festivities on Friday, amazing the Old Girl is still afloat (She is not in cement but floats free!!) What a testament to British Shipbuilding ( Sorry Scottish Shipbuilding)
