Have my uncles DB. #1116264 Stamped on the front of the book.
Sniper in WW1. Firemen/trimmer MN 1920.
Under description of voyage, he had lots with R.A. Some had foreign some not?

Just a PS to my last post.Was going to mention.
He was my mothers half brother.
Therefore my half uncle.
Thought that would be too much ammunition to give to John!

Beware of scams especially on your personal Mail. I received one some time ago from a Sheila Hawken,no relative as far as I know.She claimed to have my Father's seafaring records which she would forward to me,if I wished. I knew this to be false. I know almost all I need to know about his seafaring records. Anything else I might need to know is easily obtainable. The records of all Southampton Seamen since I'm not sure when, are contained in the City archives. I don't know if this is normal practice but I believe it is in this Port. By the way the e-mail came from Cornwall. My Father was Cornish,I just wasn't prepared to trust the e-mail, I don't know a Sheila Hawken.

There was one time when my late wife and i was staying with my daughter Teddington we went to the Kew information place and believe me it was something if it was not for my daughter I would have been lost and that's were a got a lot of information also about myself we spent nearly a half day there

*I must add this little story of my mother for the start .When the G/Castle was sunk and there was no news for awhile .My mother received a letter from the Union Castle Co (Which I have now)saying they were sorry to say that the ship is missing and your son is presumed dead.That broke her up a fair bit .then when a couple of years later she was notified that I was a pow she and some of the neighbors went to the local pub and got drunk and she had been doing some baking that all got burnt

I had all my Dads discharge books although not for long when he passed away Jan. 1963 I was walking down Marsh lane with my suit case in the jan. Of one of the worst weather storms we had seen in England in years and got caught by really heavy gust of wind it took the suit case and blew it down the lane it opened up and evything just bew away,managed to save a little of my stuff but sadly not the discharge books.I regret that to this day,and often think back to them sad times.

got some of my grandas brothers discharge papers as his original books are in a private museum in vidlin in shetland.........some of the vessels are under a 1000 ton and no engines sailig too the states and russia there are dozens of them ......he ab and bosun.....the family of brothers came to shields and settled.....although athere father an american seaman jumped a whaler in shetland in th 1870s or there abouts he kept thefamily home in shetland and the boys would go back to plough or gather the birds eggs from the cliffs and store them for winter......2 brothers were drowned the third my granda mined twice and int he water.....there are still some family in the shelands but the home that the old father named the lubba is still there.......i suppose the lubba was cos they were landlubbers when the brothers went to work the smallholding in between sailing cant think of any reason for it been called that......perhaps any shelties on the site might know if lubba has a celtic meaning......cappy a very happy granda today his grandson at 16 is training with the england under 18 rugby team in leeds a great honour to our family ....he played for england under 16s last season.....cappy was fit to bust.....he may get a place next season ....he may not ....but agreat thing to have on his cv for life.......he plays tighthead .....says he got it off his granda .......tight wallet....some how life still has surprises for us all some good some bad .......glad to be ex merchant seaman and on this site regards cappy

Never heard of the place you mention in the Shetlands. Knew Lerwick been many times. Maybe Lubba is supposed to be Lover, beleive the Scandanavians had trouble pronouncing their Vs. Like my long haired Lubba from liberpool. Cheer John S

Cappy had a look at my woolworth atlas cant find Vidlin, if didnt know you better were having us on and should be fiddling, cant find anywhere in Shetland beginning with a V. Nearest to it would be Fetlar which is one of the small islands of the group. Thinking back it was the J most Scandanavians had difficulty in pronouncing. Always remember the old Norwegian chippy saying to the senior apprentice called Jeffrey. Yust the yob yeffrey. Cheers pleased about the grandson, does he drink all your sols as well . John S

Hi John, Vidlin in the shetlands, i punched into google, who knows most things, it is there, but i cannot enlighten more, i know nothing of the area, but the old boy cappy is not having us on, KT

####morning johnthe address of the museum in the shetlands is vidlin shetland ze2 9qd........the lubba the name of the croft .....in muckle roe ...i have a photo of it it overlooks a large sound......but not the sort of place i would like to live in winter ...regards cappy
