Thanks for the Commonwealth grave data, as I indicated I managed to get to the cemetery and find his grave when I was in Berlin.

Of course, only a few are recovered in sinkings at sea.

You are really up on this genealogy thing, Marian. Thanks so much. My wife and her brother appreciated the pics of Hugh and Catherine. Catherine and William both died in Australia. I wonder what sent them there. I know in the mid-1800s there was the gold rush in Ballarat, but it may be more to do with his shipping links. As I indicated the wife of Hugh Nixon Third was really happy when she was rid of him. So he has a bad family reputation. We stayed with her after we married before coming to Canada. But we only have her side of the story.

Hi Ewen I been having a look at your Third members of Peterhead. It is proving a bit difficult as William Third seems to equate as William the Third or William, third son of so,&so. I don't know what you know of Peterhead but in the 19th Century it was one of the largest whaling ports in the U.K. employing many seamen.
This is what I have come across to date. William Third of Peterhead passed First Mates examination Nov. 1863. Important Notice William Third General Merchant & Fruiterer 79 Longate Peterhead for sale !!! from newspapers. I tried the 1881 Seamen's records held in Canada it may be a relation. Ballinbreich Castle O.N. 63070 Alex Third 38yrs. of Peterhead no William showed up. The one other name you gave Hugh ? Third. I being a member of the Scotlands People web site pulled his birth certificate. It is difficult to read, middle name? August ? 1877 at 57/1 Queens Street Peterhead. Father William Third Seaman (at sea) Mother Catherine Third M.S. Taylor.

Found much the same Bill, search William and Catherine and get Will and Kate (Royals)
