Hi Doc and other searchers, this might help to find his papers..... Also to Nela..Welcome to the site.

His name is Malcolm C Jones, giving his age as 67years works out born 1947 or thereabouts.

Difficult to pinpoint birth date as there are several Malcolm Cs between 1946-1948. mothers maiden name would be of help.

    Proof of name...

    Marriage. Malcolm C Jones....Nela Soldatov. April. 1989. District. Poole. Vol. 23. Page.660.

    Fred.

PS. Congratulations on your Silver Wedding this month....

Two possible Seamen's Pouches. May or may not be him.

    R793253 JONES M C 04/03/1947 DENBIGH BT 372/2548/137

    R781270 JONES M C 30/11/1946 BOURNEMOUTH BT 372/2503/23

His full service if it still exists will be in the following:

1941 to 1972 Fifth Register of Merchant Seaman's Service

These records are held at The National Archives at Kew in classification BT 382. The Fifth Register of Seaman’s Service 1941 to 1972.

Records of individual Merchant Seamen's sea service details are held in alphabetical surname order. These details include the following information: Name of seaman, Date and place of birth, Discharge (Seaman’s) book number, Rank, Details of the ships on which he served. These include: Name of ship and official number, date of engagement (Joining ship), Date of discharge (Leaving ship), whether ship was a foreign going of home trade vessel, and records in some cases National Insurance contributions. Details shown in these records are similar to those contained in an individual seaman's discharge book.

The actual files are held in block by surname and would require a visit to Kew unless you are willing to pay for a researcher. His file should be held in the following file BT 382/2525 covering the surnames "Jones Keith to Jones Myrddin"

Once you have the relevant details you can check to find the ships Log Book and Crew Agreements for the time he was onboard each ship, detailing who he served with at that time.
"Across the seas where the great waves grow, there are no fields for the poppies to grow, but its a place where Seamen sleep, died for their country, for you and for peace" (Billy McGee 2011)

Need a reply from Nela to narrow down more:

He was apparently born in the maternity hospital at the top of Tallow Hill ?

Possibly the parish of St Martin ? In the Worcestershire area ?

hello Nela and welcome to the site. I think perhaps you might be a little confused.
I think you are confusing Gravesend sea school with the merchant navy. the school is for boys of about 16 yrs. old to train for deck and catering. they then join the merchant navy. I was there for eight weeks in November 1947 to January 1948. I don't think anyone did more than ten weeks.

Thanks! I will keep that in mind. We have a bit of a hectic time now, as we are moving to Germany :-)
The old sailor is coming with me of course - I may not come back regularly, but I will.
    Thanks guys!

    Hi Nela.
Welcome to the site. If you Google in Gravesend sea school you will get up quite a few web sites which have former members writing in about their time there. Gravesend sea school was on the Thames river front, most of the lads were training to be stewards, time there about six weeks. who knows your husband might find some old mates on one of the sites.
    Cheers Des
