On a Cruise ship, if you are invited to the Captains Cabin for cocktails before Dinner you do not turn up in Union jack shorts and a benidorm T-Shirt. You have to wear your Dinner suit, the same as when you go for Dinner on formal nights, or the Maitre de will not allow you into the Dining Room,.
This what you do.
A dinner suit is the greatest social leveler there is , you can be anyone inside it, no one knows who you are, what you are or how much money you have From Billionaires to bin men all the same.

Ivan the point being a suit and polished shoe's does not give you the entry into a job,you need a lot more upstairs than that.In any case people dont wear suits today just have a walk down your High Street and you will see that all the major tailors are no more.If I interviewed a lad who said "I'm awful sorry to be dressed like this but I have not got a suit" if he was dressed clean and smart his name would go in the hat.I went down to the pool for my first interview to go away to sea in my brother's gear as he was in the army,and I went to Gravesend same gear and first trip (or two) to sea before I had the dosh to get a nice made to measure suit and all the trimmings to go with it.

As regards so called dressing up, which was the normal in our days. I live in the land of sloppiness as regards to this, thongs shorts and T shirts, this has even come through in some cases to Births Deaths and Marriages. Which to me is the heights of poor manners and absolute disregard to others. Anyone going for an interview as such to me would point out he had no regard for the interviewer, or himself and in which case was a self centred an ill mannered lout. Would be about 1 min undergoing an interwiew for a job that had anything to do with the public. First impressions always count in any walk of life. You dont have to be a millionaire to dress neatly and tidily, some want to show of their contempt for such by acting in the manner that they do, unfortuanetly this trend seems to be gettng larger, until some other trend appears through the eyes of some designer with a little brain for anything else. I was always taught that good manners and appearance cost nothing, except a willingness to do so. Obviously some dont and never did think like this, that is if they ever thought at all. Well Captain Kong I was thinking of taking a cruise but not having a dinner suit only a pair of jeans and a tee with stuff you jack I am alright so I will go to Aussie and see Doc Vernon I think I will not have to wear a dinner suit Will I ???

#49... Lou doubt if you will be required to carry a dinner suit. Although I have never been a fare paying passenger on such, would imagine you as the client (customer) would have preference of choice. Although a dark suit if you have would be advisable to carry. The officers (if any) at your table and the stewards attending you will be properly attired, ( they would have undergone all this at the interviews for their jobs) and it is in respect for them that you should appear to be dressed the same as those at the table. Ref. dinner suits at the present moment in time have 3, I am usual in one at least 3 evenings a week, I would not like to wear, but as this is what is proscribed I have no choice. Even criminals borrow a suit to appear in court, hoping it will create a good impression. But each to his own. However I'm glad to say that I'm still old fashioned respecting the values instilled into me by my parents even though they didn't have two happenies to rub together, they had pride and pride in their appearance and hopefully it has rubbed off onto me.

Lou, I saw you nothing but smart all the time we spent in Liverpool and I'm sure your MN Blazer, veterans badge would be welcome at any table aboard any ship, and if you deigned to wear your medals the Captain would offer you his seat
