I had no education, I didnt learn to read and write until I was 11 years old. There was a war on and schools closed etc. I never did Maths. only sums, add ups and take aways.
and went to sea as a Mess Peggy.
But I knew what I wanted and educated myself, and with my company who never asked any questions about my lack of education sent me to Fleetwood College and then I never looked back. No one asked if I had O or A Levels, I didnt.
But I did it because I was determined to get there.

I would suggest that when interviewing , especially if it is a company , not a College , they would look at the whole person . If the academic results scrape by , then you might be able to make it up in personality . I did my own departmental recruitment , as did quite a few early leavers here , those who for whatever reason did a few years and went ashore . Me I came ashore to save my liver amongst other things .If you pass the minimum requirement , then your prospective employer is about to invest a lot of money in your future . There are a few golden rules for interviews , that will make that difference .The biggest one I found took people off of my most wanted list was the inability to listen to what the questioner was asking . But ! if you are the right man for the job , get the interviews right will make up for the UCAS scores

Interviews.
You are a Salesman, the product that you are selling to the Company is yourself. Be smartly dressed in a business suit and school tie, shiny shoes and clean shaven. Only You can sell yourself. Show confidence, A firm handshake, not a wet lettuce of one. sign of a whimp.
What can you do for the Company.
What do you know about the company, show an interest in the Company`s business, learn all about it before you go.
The ships, the history, the trading patterns. Know what you are talkng about, Show confidence and have a ready smile. and your half way there.

I had a guy turn up in Tee shirt and jeans once , I don't know if he was any good or not , he just made my ears go deaf . I had another send in a 46 page CV I never read it . One , maybe one and a half pages of A4 , any more than that is padding . Get a company's profile , talk to an employee if you can ., Then practice with an friend before you go

I have no doubts that you will achieve what you desire and encourage you to continue to seek all advice, research all and then decide every which way for yourself, I listen to many, but act on the best. That is the best advice. K.

stephen in my business life i interviewed many hundreds of persons for various positions......i have thought for a while if there was any advice i could give you worth having.......the most importantthings would be what has been mentioned by many others on the site......agood tidy clean appearence........a smile does not go amiss ....know as much as you can about the situation you are applying for........try not to give smart answers......show an eagerness without being over the top ......all employers requireto see some sort of stability before them .......but most important of all be yourself .....as i often found it so obvious ifsomeone was tryingto gild the lily...and nothing gives a worse impression than that......remember manners dont sit until asked ......i had nothing but a determination to give my wife and children a better life than mine......i listened and learned and have ended with assets beyond my dreams......a long way for a raggy arsed youth going to the vindi .......if at ist you dont succeed go again and again.....there will be disapointments .....but dont give up just keep going......goodluck to you in your quest regards cappy

I have lost count of the number of interviews i have conducted just reading these last couple of posts tells me how people are selected who are not necessarily the best candidate.The lad in the Tshirt and jeans could've been a far better candidate that the lad in the smart suit and polished shoes.Whilst i agree that an effort should be made to present yourself in a smart manner for an interview,what about the lad who has just left school and never owned a suit in his life and cant afford to buy one as he has never had any earnings,is he dismissed out of hand.What happens at interviews is the interviewer suffers what is known as the "Halo Effect" as soon as someone walks into the room they like the looks of them and right away they want to give this person the job above more experienced people.Then we have the "stereo type" these are just interviewed as a matter of course and their name is not going in the hat from the start.People have been given jobs because they support the same football team or they are the same religeon.Many people I interviewed were to work with me so I obviously wanted someone who i thought would be compatible in the work place,I was'nt looking for experience as I would train them the way in which i wanted it done.

Generally the job has gone already, the interviews are a waste of every ones time, but has to be seen to be done to be legal.

To get the job, you have to fit the criteria, knowing someone on the inside should not be the way, but generally is.
