The last house I had was built to our own specifications i.e. we could leave inner walls out as necessary. It was built on a 750 sq. Metre block with 4 bedrooms one en-suite , plus one general bathroom , 2 toilets , 1 what one could call a cinema room , one family room , one fitted kitchen , one games room large entrance hall , facing a lake with ducks on and 80 metres from the Indian Ocean and a 3 mile long beach which was crowded if more than 6 people at one time on. Built for retirement and got 21 years out of it. But like all things one ages and grows out of energy doing gardens etc. So now live more in keeping with how one started in life but with the added luxury of getting every thing done for one as required . That is not luxury to the ozzy life style , but one forgets how it used to be and we all have short memory’s also by law living standards and building regulations in W.A. Every house has to have a laundry room , no washing machines and driers in the kitchen. JS. PS and a 2 car garage . Was all paid for with my superannuation of 11 years. JS…
I watch these property programs on tv which seem to be popular at the moment. Virtually every property you see being renovated, they are knocking down inner walls and opening up spaces, putting in huge bi fold doors (very trendy just now), but I am always amazed by the total lack of any comment as to how much energy will be needed to heat these very large areas, especially as you will only be inhabiting a small part of them on a regular basis. Whilst it looks nice and spacious it must be a nightmare to keep them warm in winter, especially on a night when you might just occupy a smallish area watching telly.Quote:

Like many here in Oz we built, three of them over the years.
First one was in a new area, but after six years it was getting a bit crowded so we moved.
About 15 klm up the road to a small town.
It has some history as it was here that Ivo Bligh in 1882 began what is now the Ashes cricket series with Oz.
The ashes were created here.
So we built a nice house, 3 bedrooms, one with en suite, bathroom 2 dunnies, 1 entertainment room, 1 formal dinning room, kitchen 1 lounge and a study.
After six years with Scottish Lil next door, an alki who we often found drooped across our driveway when coming home we decided to move.
Went back to the builder, found another block a bit bigger at 850 meters the other was about 825, and built the same house again.
It is 400 meters from the other one and we can see that from the kitchen window.
Drougt proof garden so easy to maintain, but in time we may down size to a life style village.
Prefer one with a club house with happy hour every day.
Something one could never do in the likes of the uk John .Affordability and earnings did not match up with buying land and building your own house , biggest problem was figuring out where to put the swimming pool. I certainly have appreciated the time I have lived in Australia as a resident like the song unfortuanetly used by Queensland and Northern Territory’s Air Service for advertising purposes and blotting their copybook. Still the smoke will soon clear. The happy hour here is now 2 hours by public demand but my wife has grounded me as says I am taking too many tablets 18 a day at moment enough to turn one to laughing gas ? It’s every Thursday here in the village , so will be a prisoner tomorrow night .cheers JS
One of the reasons a lot of Brits buy property in Spain or France you get more bang for you buck. Property prices in Spain have tumbled especially now seeing as if you do not take residency you can only stay 6 months.
We have had seven houses, three in NZ, two the first time there, one the second, and four in Aus, one we built ourselves with all the mod cons, and now which my wife grieves for, but that is fading. The house we have now was built in the early fifties for the engineers who built the first Snowy Hydro, in a lovely town full of Brits,Italian's Yugoslav's and Greeks, or at least the second generation of, one of the most friendliest places one could choose to live in, as our son, daughter and Granddaughter also live here we have no regrets .
