PS went 13 months with one crew never found the topaz where he lived don’t think he had a bunk slept in the alleyways , we had 2 ,deck and E.R. Maybe they slept together and exchanged socks when they got dirty , easy to do if weren’t watching each other. We had Indian officers and they would not even talk to them , Cheers JS

I didn't know that 69 was your lucky number.
I only sailed with Arabs firemen, can't say we ever mixed, they had the port side of the accommodation, and kept to that side of the ship.
The Cadets I sailed with on my first ship starting in 49 and lasting for two years were great blokes, we all, deck boys Jos and Cadets used to go ashore together, don't think I ever thought of them carrying tales. The skipper was the best so no problems.

Yes thermal cols from here in Oz is some of the cleanest in the world.

Was told by a Uni guy many years ago it is from the dry nature of Oz that make sit so good.
Coal from some cooler countries such as UK, Russia, Poland is still 'wet' for want of a better word so does not burn so clean or offer the same heat.

#299 Most of them Arab Firemen probably came from South Shields Des, so you wouldnt of understood them in any case. Story goes they all got steak for breakfast as couldnt eat bacon. No flies on an Arab South Shields Fireman. Think Cappy was in on it. JS

Still a Yemeni presence in Shields, used to be predominantly around the Laygate area (I think the first purpose built mosque was built there).

The best curry house in shields was originated from a arab fireman and his family ...on one vessel i was on some would ask me to read a letter ....i would wind them up about ali next door trying to get his feet under the table ......and they would like the joke and pass it betwen each other etc......they were never a prob ...having there own small cooking area ......there curries were ai.....but never liked them little tins they carried to do there ablutions with.....cappy

The Residents club that my parents went to every Friday night in Hill Heads, the last time was over there was then a mosque. The building just the same but used for another purpose. Suppose the price of Federation beer is not a big draw card these days. JS
Did you ever know one who was left handed Cappy ? Wonder if they ever changed hands for eating. JS

Fed brewery been long gone John. It was moved from the toon in 81 to brand new brewery in Dunston, eventually taken over by S&N for a while after they closed the Tyne brewery, then closed when Heineken bought out S&N. Been demolished for a long time. Did a few jobs in there between 81 and 87, had to call the wife a few times to come and bring me home after a few hours in the managers bar (Fed Scotch WAS LIKE DRINKING MILK).

My firemen were from the famous Tiger Bay. I saw a cooking program on Tv the other day, all kinds there from Yemen to Turkey.
