    Default Typhoid Mary

Ellis Island was in operation from 1892 until 1954, but prior to Ellis Island opening on the 1st January 1892, from the 1st August 1855 the immigration processing facility in New York was Castle Garden Immigration Depot in Lower Manhattan, which was originally called Castle Garden Emigrant Landing Depot.

It was a pre existing fort, which had been called Castle Clinton until the Army ceased using it as a fort in July 1824, after which it was called Castle Garden. Today it's known as Castle Clinton National Monument Castle Garden.

The reason that Ellis Island was opened was because increasing numbers of immigrants were arriving with cholera and smallpox and so a more isolated location was needed in which to process them.

A lot of people who later became famous passed through there, as did one infamous, and tragic, Ulster woman from Cookstown. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Mallon

There is a searchable database for Castle Garden which contains 13.3 million immigrant arrivals and is 90% complete. Castle Garden
