How times have changed
I remember during the fifties whilst growing up in Port Glasgow, my father who worked in the shipyards had to work on Christmas day. Christmas day wasn't a holiday in Scotland at that time. We used to have our Christmas meal in the evening when dad came as most of Scotland also had a late meal.
England celebrated Christmas with a holiday whilst New Years day was considered a working day.
On the New Years day News, the used to mention the number of workers that hadn't turned up for work at the factories in England as workers took an unofficial holiday.
Now both nationalities have as a minimum at least seven days off.
Regards
Vic

Re: How times have changed
The short time I worked for Harrisons of Clyde in the offshore Industry, ( they didn't last in that particular field of endeavour as the competition was too ruthless as regards low wages and running costs and they couldn't compete) anyhow they tried to make conditions better off their own bat, and paid 3 days pay extra for Xmas and New Years day if at sea. This was in 1988/1989. Cheers JS
