My brother was happy with that, he invested it wisely and made a lot of money, bought a Guest House in Blackpool and made more money. Sold it at another big profit and along with an excellent Pension. He then retired in Comfort.
So he was happy.

Brian the truth of the matter is,this is the situation if they could not get a job because of age and any other reason.They could draw the unemployment benefit for 6 months only,after that they were supposed to go onto Social Security but because they had capital of £40,000 six months ago they were not allowed S.S. and had to be self sufficient intill the £40.000 was used up over a long period of time.They could not say I spent it on a cruise,a car or any other luxury hard luck nothing for you.So the £40.000 had to keep them for however long.I remember being in Spain talking to this very posh Brit,he said I wish I was a miner and offered that money I would snatch their hand off.When I told him the situation that the miners would be in he said why don't the government tell people that.

##jim in the real world all would prefer strivers to skivers the problem is the millions given to the skivers by the strivers .....i certainly dont abhor the miners ...i had miners in my shields family ..they went to nottingham and refused to strike ...i know nothing of there trials beyond that .....i have never called a working miner on this site ....you abuse me by saying that... what i have and allways will abuse is the scargills and there minions .....who put the final nail in the miners coffins as the need for coal died........if the same frame of thought was given to a true sailing ship man ....a steam ship would never have evolved.....but there you are we each have our views.....do not you think it strange all the unions coming out... against the relaxation time... of the majority by millions.... of the true workers who just get on with the job.......cheers cappyQuote:

with that £40,000 a man could have done very well for himself. With good investments he would have No Need to go on benefits when it all went as that money invested wisely could have given them a Very Comfortable life.
When I took redundancy from ESSO I got £18,000 payment. They gave me an Excellent Financial adviser, paid for by them, who told me what to do with the money, I followed their advice, That was 30 years ago this year, 1986. I do world cruises every year, I own two homes, and I still have more money than when I started 30 years ago, in fact I am off today to pay just over £10,000 for my next two month cruise round the Pacific Islands, in March. have to pay 3 months in advance. and that still leaves me more than I started with 30 years ago.
If a man wants to blow his £40,000 on ale and holidays until it all goes that is his own individual problem, but the Miners got their money and also good Financial Advisers all paid for by the employer, and many came out on top with loads of money.
Every man is in charge of his own destiny, If a man wants to go on benefits he can do, But if a man wants to make money by good investments ha also can do the choice is his , but the others like to complain about people who have more than them when they could have done the same.
I know men who have thrown their redundancy cheques over the Bar of thei local ale house and the attitude of , "Throw me out when it is done" That was their choice, no use whining about it.
When Harold Wilson closed down the Lancashire Cotton Industry in 1967, Dad was thrown out after 52 years and six months service, he started there when he was 12 years old, he got nothing but a pension of 26 shilling a week for byssinosis of the lungs, cancer, when he died on the 12th of the month they came to the door and took the money off my mother for the month as it was paid for the month in advance,
So times have been tough for many people but with a bit of common sense people can have a better life instead of whining about it.
I enjoy a good Debate. makes life a little more interesting.

The NUM paid rent of £34,000 a year on the property between 1991 and 2011. But when it stopped doing so Mr Scargill went to the High Court.
He said the union should cover the rent until he died and for longer if his partner survived him.
He also insisted fuel bills be met, plus his accountant’s fees for filing his annual tax return. The judge ruled against him.
When news of his first attempt to buy the flat emerged in 2014, Mr Scargill said he had planned to transfer ownership to the NUM.
He bought the property two days later for £1,050,000, according to Land Registry records.
Property experts who examined the documents said some of the funds for the purchase came from Mr Scargill’s daughter Margaret Logan, a 54-year-old GP, and her 61-year-old husband Stephen.
A month before the sale they bought Mr Scargill’s Yorkshire home, which he still lives in.:rolleyes: Sources say this transaction will have helped his application for the London flat."
