Butterfly Trays.

I think it was written into the Articles somewhere that it was an offence to bring on board intoxicating liquor. On cargo ships we were very conscientious and circumspect, all the times I was Nightwatchman and on the gangway I never saw a thing, saw plenty of huge rats on the quayside and tried knocking them off with stones in various ports. The Gangways used to be painted white at the bottom half, and the story went around a rat would never cross over. Same memorys, used to be painted on the ratguards, Dear Rat please use gangway the paint is now dry. I used to early on think the rat guards were to stop rats getting on board, when in fact it was the other way round it was to stop them getting ashore. The reason they were compulsory by the Port Health. JS

To digress from trays and teasets anyone remember double sided silky jacket that you could buy in Japan They were very colourful ,and if I remember rightly only cost about 2'000 yen .in the 50s they were over 1000 yen to the pound ,I bet they would be worth a fortune now .i got skint in Canada and sold mine for a few dollars ,the way how the Japanese antique market is now ,I bet they would make a few bob now.i wonder if anyone out there has any.

i can see jim you are part of the splinter group regarding marys wooden leg but if you had it you could always do that im jake the peg da da da da da da with the wooden leg ...regards cappy

#43... You brought them back to mind. Never had the nerve to wear one though. Didn't mind wearing a kimino though especially in the Japanese style hotels. Although wasn't too keen on the wooden block in lieu of a soft pillow. Cheers JS

There we were in Port Melbourne in the days of six o'clock swill. We had gone ashore thta night and as bona fide travellers were allowed to enter the pub by the side door. We had to pay half a crown to go in and sign the book. The barman put apile of emply plate sat the end of the bench saying if the cops come in tell them you had a great meal.
We left there at who knows what hour.
Next morning the second steward called me to say there was a phone call for me.
It was the barman, apparently in my state of some inebriation I had ordered a case fo Fosters to be delivered to my cabin.
How he got the dozen long necks on board and into my cabin is still a mystery, but we enjoyed them all the same.

Was a sleeping kimona , Marian, Cappy refused to wear one and always slept nuddy. That was very rude to Japanese philosophy, was alright going into a common bath, like Ivan used to do with his Japanese family, but to go to bed with nothing on was considered barbaric. Regards JS
