I attended a Military Dinner at an Army base, I was talking to a very attractive young lady US Lieutenant, she had a breast full of medals.
I asked her what they were all for, I thought what a Brave young lady.
She said, "That one is for going to Canada on Exercise, that one is for coming to England where I am now based, that one is for going to Germany on a two week exercise. and so on.
I guess the only Action she had a ever seen was in a bedroom.
I got two medals, The MN medal, and one from Australia for when we took the Australian Troops, 2RAR, to the Malayan War IN August 1955, the Australian Prime Minister refused to let them go into the War Zone as there was an election due in the following January and didn't want any Body Bags coming home to spoil his chances. So we dropped them off in Penang Island and then we took the cargo, a few thousand tons of Ammunition, Guns , Armoured Vehicles etc etc. to Butterworth where they should have gone, That was in the War Zone, so we spent over a week discharging into barges with the help of the British Army, So if you spend 7 days in the War Zone the Australian Government gave us the GSM medal with the Malaya Clasp
I wear them on MN Day.
When we evacuated the French Foreign Legion from the beach in Viet Nam after the big battle where they were defeated after the Dien Bien Phu, we spent three days under fire running our life boats ashore to pick up the survivors, After the Captain asked to French Government about Medals , they replied `None`.
Brian.;
Are you sure the French didnt say to your captain aujord qui mon Cherie, there again it was before the days of cross sex and mongrels I suppose. The legionaires used to jump over the side of the troopships going through the Suez canal I was told, nobody wanted to go. Dien Bien Phu was a good example of bad generalship and were caught in a crossfire from 3 sides the historians will have you believe, apart from being on the lower ground. With all the modern armaments it is still the foot slogger who wins wars. JWS
Re # 10.
Firstly, let me say he isn't a Duke, Prince Edward is the Earl of Wessex. He was an Officer Cadet in the Royal Marines and was brave enough to make the decision that military life wasn't for him. At least he was in training long enough to experience and know what square bashing was all about, a damn sight harder than winning an egg and spoon race I can asure you. The Prince and his family, although happy to stay out of the limelight, carry out their Royal duties dilligently and are highly respected wherever they go. Countess Sophie , daughter of a retired tyre salesman, is the Queen's favourite daughter in law.
So why mock them I ask. Here is something to remember:
"People who make fun of others, usually can't think of a single good word to say about themselves".

####there are quite a few on our site who have medals that are truly deserved
......i would guess the ones who have none are the biggest critics of prince edward ......we cant all be heroes or pass the marines tests.....we are all different .....but how often have i found in my life the folk who scorn others are perhaps not in the front row when the **** hits the fan.....in my view it amounts to ....looking for someone to make themselves hopefully look a bit bigger......cappy
If that was not pathetic it would be funny. One's that scorn others, post after post scorning union members, Labour Party members and everyone else who disagrees with your point of view.
How many posts condemning benefit scroungers have you written little big man.
I had dinner with an SAS Man now retired, but still cannot mention his name. he said if you have any Medals, always wear them with pride. they are not for you, they are for the ones who never returned, Because it Reminds people.
Brian
###oops blood pressure louis .....time to see your doctor again perhaps ....if a man is scrounging benefits ...is he not a benefit scrounger ....seemingly not in the world you live in....but that is your choice .....must have said something that rang a bell perhaps never mind innit........cappy
My small avenue is full of Benefit Scroungers , all on Benefits, all have two cars, all have had New Gas Boilers FREE, I have just paid £1,600 for mine two months ago. because I worked and get a miserable MN Pension so I pay £1,200 A YEAR IN INCOME TAX AND PAY £1,500 A YEAR COUNCIL TAX that these BUMS never pay a penny but get all the Benefits. So I have to Pay £ 2,700 a year out of my Pension to keep these Bums in a Life of ease..
These BUMS have never worked since they arrived in this country,
So That is the reason I would Condemn and criticize any Benefit Scrounger. and any one who supports `people` like that must be just as Bad.

any how this thread is for The Wearing of Medals.
#17 Brian, Quite right about the SAS chap. And those are the exact words I use when asked during my poppy stints about the medals, saying, 'I'm not the hero, those that didn't come back are the real heroes, I'm only the symbol for you to remember them and me not to forget. I wear them, my Armed Forces and the old M.N. silver badge on my jacket lapel with pride. Remarkable how few people know of the campaign medals. Honoured and surprised how many children and youngsters ask more questions. Cheers, Eric
