Not wishing to boast or anything but the first and only house my parents brought and which I grew up in, the garden was so big the local farmer used to come and cut the grass with his tractor and mower, after taking all the cut grass away he would graze a few sheep on the land to keep the grass down and that was only at the side and rear of the house (a 3 bedroom bungalow) At the front the ground dropped away in a steep bank that was never cut and at the edge of the property was an abandoned bobbin mill which was mine and my brothers playground. There was even a short rail track on which a hand cart had ben used to shift the timber from storage into the mill where it was turned into wooden bobbins for the Lancashire cotton mills. The mill had been driven by water power and the remains of the water wheel along with all the internal drives and pulleys inside were still intact. Along with the mill there were 4 cottages that had belonged to the mill where the manager and foremen had lived. There was also outbuildings for storage along with an abandoned orchard that was full of apple and plum trees as wild as wild raspberry canes.
In one cottage (none had electric light or inside sanitation) lived three unmarried sisters who due to their age me and bro reckoned were witches but in fact were the daughters of a Liverpool sea captain and owner of his own sailing ship.
Idyllic child hood really, bit akin to the Larkins in Last of the summer wine. Never spent much time indoors beyond time spent sleeping and eating.
After father died my mum sold off have the back land to a local builder who built a large 4 bedroom property with large garden on it. Even so the remaining land used to take me about half a day to mow with a petrol driven flymo when on leave. Never touched the bank in front of the house though.
