Re: tyres
The second love of my life was a canary yellow Corvette Sting Ray, our answer to Britain's Jaguar XKE. Back in the nineteen seventies I was taking my eldest boy, who was about twelve at the time, to watch the L.A. Rams play somebody, forgot who, American football. The stadium, the L.A. Coliseum, is situated in the heart of an African-American neighbor hood near downtown Los Angeles..
I got a flat! I locked the car and took my son and searched for a public phone booth that worked. Finally found one and called our equivalent of the AAA. Back to the car and waited.
Now the spare tire on "Vette" is stored in a container under the rear of the car. The usual way to get the tire out is to jack-up the car, remove the flat tire, pull a rod under the car, and the container opens and the spare tire drops out. Yeah right...AAA performs the first steps, car jacked-up, tire off, but the rod on the container is bent and will not release the spare tire.
The AAA guy basically tells me to " Have a nice day," as there is nothing he can do, I'm on my own. It's a hot afternoon, Chris, my son, is thirsty and we are stuck in the wrong end of town to be "Whitey".
A Corvette pulls up behind me and two black guys about 6' 4"-6' 6" climb out and walk up to me.
Them: "What's up man?"
I explain the whole sorry story and the fix I'm in.
Them: "No prob-lemo buddy."
One of the guys goes to the rear of the car, bends his knees, grabs hold of the car and lifts the rear end as he straightens up. The second man crouches down, and with the inside of his forearm, gives the container a sharp blow, it opens and the tire drops out. The second man pulls the tire out wheels it around the car puts it in place, the first guy grabs the wrench and mounts the tire, and lowers the jack, the spare tire placed back in the container, closed...and I'm watching open mouthed. From start to finish, 3 minutes tops.
Them: "There you go man, us "Vette" owners have to look out for one another."
They're in their Corvette, a wave, toot on the horn, and on their way.
And so were we!
Thanks for the memories Cappy. (I hope this is not too long for you....He,he!)

Re: tyres
Had something the same happen .
I hit a large bit of wood side on and it knocked the tyre sideways and air went.
Luck would have it I had a elect air pump and replaced the air.
I did get tyre checked and no damage was done .
Toyota's have got a TAKE YOU HOME TYRE> As a spare . I used it once

Cappy, a similar thing (but I didn't notice the cause) happened to me a couple of weeks ago but fortunately the tyre did not go completely flat and I was not far from a service station with a pump. Not a problem after that, anyway my 16 year old Toyota Avalon Grande has the real McCoy in the boot. I have a beaut little pump that didn't cost much that works from the cigarette lighter that I use for my wheelbarrow etc and keep that in the car.

Re: tyres
##i had two fitted on the front of a rover many years ago ...the next day on the M1....very early in the morn one burst.....i was travelling quite fast and the situation wasvery precarious......a wagon driver who was passing at the time saw my predicament and slowed down hard as i carreered infront of him.......i ended on the hard shoulder the tyre in shreds........the wagon driver stopped and asked couild he help.....i thanked him and said no......two three days later coming north much slower the other one went ......arriving in leeds i went to the supplier who denied it was his fault .....a big argument ensured where i threatened to shove both tyres up his arce.......i then rang the head office and a top man came to see me and the tyres under threat of legal proceedings ......he inspected the tyres....and said they had been fitted wrong.....as the liittle barrels inside were spinning loose and causing a friction that almost set the tyres on fire .......he said he would give me 4 tyers at no cost to settle the deal .....i accepted deal done... i dont think those denovo lasted long on the market ...could be wrong...i believe thy were quite expensive at the time at a wild guess i think that was 40 years ago ...give 4 or 5years each way.....regards cappy

Re: tyres
Hi Cappy.
I've had two near new cars in the last ten years one in NZ and one when we got back over here in Aus. The spare wheel in the boot is a small thin version in order to give more boot space, and you can't do any more than 80 kilometers and hour when it is fitted, you are only allowed to use it to get to the nearest service station to get the puncture repaired. When we bought the first one we got a puncture and when I opened the boot I thought the wheel was the same but it was a yellow wheel, the yellow or red wheels are to let the coppers know so that you don't keep using it. Can't see them selling cars here without a spare, christ just think of driving across the Nullabor plains with no spare.
Cheers Des
