Hi John.
Just an update on my house after five years it now attracts many comments from passers by.

My daughter is one of the top artists in Cooma, she was lucky my wife is related to John Constable the landscape artist, her great grandmother and constables mother were sisters.
These are two she has just exhibited, one the lady who runs the art gallery here in Cooma and her what she likes painting most animals

London 1969 our first house just u the road from Northolt station cost us 4500 GBP. Sold in 1975 for $8200GBP. Last time I looked on the net, 2014, similar house now about 125,000GBP.

#42 I love John Constables work I have two of his pictures hanging in my Den, The Hay Wain and The Lock, unfortunately they are
not the originals :rolleyes:. Your daughters drawings are brilliant maybe it's in the genes, my dad did oil paintings of seascapes and sailing ships also landscapes with windmills, he did have some people interested in buying them but he used to give them away as gifts. JC.

#45, My maternal grandfather painted as a hobby mainly landscapes. However these were exchanged for alcohol as I learned when visiting a friend whose aunt was a publican and recognised his style hanging on her wall!:)

#45 It's great to know these things about our forbears isn't it Marian, whenever I find something new it gets my imagination going thinking about their lives, the pleasures and the hardships in their working lives and recreational activities. For me it's the 19th
century that it all happened, the census forms tell a story of the living conditions, mortality rates in children etc. I'm glad I took it up
as I've learned so much about my roots, one instance was a shotgun wedding in1790 when the culprit was showered with all of the
hellfire and brimstone lecturing by the local vicar/parson and a very irate future father in law, and it was all recorded in the church records. Name of said culprit? "John Collier", who else, I have seen so many death certificates with my name on, that I feel I shouldn't be here now :) cheers, JC

#39.. JC The prices of those days I suppose reflect the wages and peoples aspirations. That first house 2 up and 2 down, sold in 1969 for 3600 pounds and bought a 4 bedroom house for 4800 pounds. Was in this house until 1991 when emigrated, and still had a mortgage on which would probably of still been there when I retired. The only way ahead that I saw in UK was to borrow off the mortgage, this house stood empty for 2 years the estate agent must have thought he was on to a good thing. The wife flew back to the UK and changed the estate agent and was sold in the first week. In 10 years in Australia I owned three houses all at the same time, granted they all had mortgages, but two had rented out. England as regards the average persons aspirations to a better life could not hold a candle to Australia in those days. They still have problems here with so called shortage of housing, in a lot of cases this is because those complaining have a shortage of will power to work. There are of course genuine cases, but no one in Australia should be in dire straits if the truth was known. Most of the people I know came out here as 10 pound poms, there is no way they would have achieved what they did if in the UK. Most who stuck it out are well off by standards I remember in UK, if nothing else at least the weather is better, and you do get used to the beer with time. Cheers John S

But I know although we had to pay our own Air fares to come here in 1980 (missed the cheap immigration by 2 Years then)
we would certainly not have what we do if we remained in South Africa,and although I still dearly miss and love my Birth Country there is no way at all,that I would ever return to live!
Australia has been really good to us!

You either love Australia or you don't Doc. Those who don't should go back where they came from, this should also apply to any country where if the immigrant to that port of refuge cant fit into that society, should clear out of it. Think the uk would come a couple of inches out of the water if was carried out. Most on here myself included moan about the influx of illegal immigrants into the country of our residence, this in most cases is not race related but more so about those coming in not adaptable and have no intention of becoming adaptable to that countrys way of life but want to come in and receive benefits and carry on with their biblical life style. This is not on, and all those head cases who advocate letting them do this, should themselves find another place of abode more in keeping with what they are advocating. Cheers JS
