    Default Sir Tim Hunt

    Bloody ridiculous

A Nobel laureate has resigned from his position as honorary professor at a UK university after he made comments about the "trouble with girls" in science.

University College London (UCL) said Sir Tim Hunt - a Royal Society fellow - had resigned from his position within its faculty of life sciences.

He told a conference that women in labs "cry" when criticised and "fall in love" with male counterparts.

He told the BBC he "did mean" the remarks but was "really sorry".

A statement from the university read: "UCL can confirm that Sir Tim Hunt FRS has resigned from his position as honorary professor with the UCL faculty of life sciences following comments he made about women in science at the World Conference of Science Journalists on 9 June.

"UCL was the first university in England to admit women students on equal terms to men, and the university believes that this outcome is compatible with our commitment to gender equality."

With a name like Hunt it doesn't take too much thought to what his nickname was, probably by the same girls he supposedly ostrasized, he probably lived with that without bursting into tears. Can just imagine the girls behind his back when discussing, Hunt the ****. and having a good giggle. JS

#1, I'm afraid Gentlemen sometimes men can be eejits too. He was speaking to a room full of women scientists.duh!

Think of course what you like in private but the days of blatant sexist comments aired publicly are over. Whilst I think he is a wimp for resigning he did prattle on for several minutes in stunned silence.

Do feel though EXTREME feminists should lighten up, why they don't acknowledge men are a completely different species and embrace is beyond me

This scenario reminds me of Gerald Ratner. Just proves, doesn't matter how clever you are, any person opening their mouth and letting their tummy rumble is not always appreciated by the masses.

To be scientists, Marian they had to be strong intelligent women. There are more ways to skin a cat than pressing the gender response button. Even Hamlet referred to 'the proud man's contumely' and 'the insolence of office' - regardless of gender insults have been hurting people since Adam was a boy. I've had my share.

Unfortunately intelligence and common sense rarely come in the same packet, applicable to both parties

Reminds me John in the Doric (Now the Cock And Seaman)in those days all pubs had a public phone which the barmaids loved to answer. The lads would ring from the phone out side and ask the barmaid if she could shout if Mike Hunt was in there. Can you imagine the barmaid in a scouse accent shouting is Mike Hunt in here.
    Regards.

Think I've put up before. In 1957 was up for a Radar Observers cert. recently brought out by the BOT. Was up with 2 other mates one called Cock and the other one Balls. When registering at the old Marine school in Ocean road South Shields there was a young girl receptionist and the one called Cock when asked to spell said COX. He must have gone back later when there was a bloke on duty and changed. The Radar tickets in those days were a weeks course and were two types of radar, one the old fashioned type where the trace went horizontally across the screen and the one where the trace went clockwise round it. No true motion and all plotting of targets had to be on a relative bearing on a piece of paper. No alarm bells to wake you up if a ship was on a collision course. Used to be known as Radar assisted collissions. Nowadays still have collissions with all the fool proof aids to navigation. JS
