Thanks Rob, As it was a medal of commemeration, they should of also put out to the general public as available for a price, there will be many old age pensioners and collectors of memorabillia who would have bought. To give ad lib to some who are still wet behind the ears defeats the whole object of the exercise. People who were there when the Queen was enthroned and staunch Loyalists should have the option of receiving whether for a price or not. Has been very unwisely distributed. What would have been nicer than a gong for " t I was a government employee on the day " would have been a Merchant Navy service , or long service the problem with commemorative medals is it becomes a decoration like American regalia and medals , rsther than a service or award for deeds done or places served . Fair play to anyone who is campaigning , but if they got it recognised , I honestly believe it will be under the same conditions as everyone else
#34... Rob as I have stated in previous posts there is a medal for service in Australia. There is no reason why a similar one was not introduced years ago in the UK. It is purely for service in Shipping and there are if remember 2 different medals. I am the recipient of 3 of them. Any Australian seafarer is entitled to them as long as he comes within the limits. The regulations are 1. To be an Australian Citizen and 2 To have completed 15 years service on Australian ships. I queried that part with the government dept. which runs the medal scheme and as there are none or very few Australian flag ships about, so they accepted other flags. Copies of discharges and proof of Identity among other things are required, " The Australian Merchant Service Cross" is issued to those with 15 years service and thereafter a Clasp for every consequetice 15 years. You will probably find this under Austrailian Merchant Service Cross on Google. If in the right place at the right time it will be awarded at some form of ceremony. JS, as I read it, it say's Past and present, surely that means all, who served, but if the only way, we can get one is to buy it, I don't think I like that, a lot of old sea dogs on here have served, 5, 10, 15, 20, years or more, not 5mins down the road, then maybe I read into it wrong. take care.Quote:

I have been told so many times, that will never happen, this will never happen etc. Perseverance paid off and though I doubt that the Jubilee Medal will be achieved, would hope that with enough support something good will come out of all, it is so easy not to bother, not to attempt or try. This is for them, for you. Would hate to see in the future as said, all becomes further forgot as apparently few then could be bothered.
