Recognise the Merchant Navy by issuing past and present seafarers of this country a Diamond Jubilee medal:

Petitioning Graham Stuart MP
The Diamond Jubilee Medal was issued to the Armed Forces, and Key support services. The Merchant Navy was omitted, the Prison Service, Fire Brigade, Police Force, Cadet Force Supervisors, Ambulance Service, Rescue services and BANKERS.
It has taken 70 years to get the Merchant Navy the Russian Convoy Medal, will it be 70 years before we are recognised again? The only medal issued since WW2 was the Falklands and how many lives did it cost the Merchant Navy.

We have now almost 950 signed.. I will carry on this fight for as long as it takes. But I need YOUR SUPPORT Please share the info in this petition to others .. I Thank You whole heartedly. I can say 100% It is not so much the medal.. BUT RESPECT We Deserve. Thanks for your support. Geoffrey Johnson
Just so I get it clearly in my mind , the lads in the RFA already have this , so m I assuming that the only other recipients would be people serving at the date and having have completed five full calendar years of service on 6 February 2012 , because If so I wondered how many people were actually serving members of the British Merchant Navy , sailing on British Ships at the time , because I believe there are less than 150 ships and around twenty of those with around 2000 men are already covered by the RFA . I think those guys deserve every recognition , when the PCSOs get a medal , I think MN service is as meritorious , if not more so , but wondered how many we are actually talking about .
My vote was for: Recognise the Merchant Navy by issuing past and present seafarers of this country a Diamond Jubilee medal: K

I totally and absolutely agree with the sentiment Keith , but I would believe as there was a five year previous , service to the date applied to the Armed Services , Civil Services etc , I believe there will be a tough fight without result as to apply it retrospectively it would have to be applied to all the ex soldiers , RN Sailors , airmen , Police , Fire Service , Ambulance , and that would be a lot of people , some were only short term ie five years . I wish the petitioner all the best ,and will of course sign , but feel the task will be drowned at birth because of the retrospective application to everyone else . Best Wishes to all who try though
Keith, As there seems to be some discrepancy re. Rules of receiving this Jubilee Medal re. MN Service, do you have an Email address for applications for same. To clear this matter up, whilst not being a member of the RFA, who are as far as I am aware are ordinary merchant seamen in any case, would like to apply for to see how far can get with the facts that I served with Naval Party 1007 from 26.10.78 to 4.8.82. Although under the 5 years stated, I also did time with conversions of vessels to armed patrol boats for the Falklands, that is taken out on trials etc. Would be interesting to see what sort of answer would get, if it was possible to make application for same. Cheers John S.
