    Default Chips

One afternoon, many years ago, I was having a quiet, peaceful run ashore by myself in the Skandi bar, Valpo.
I was talking to the owners teenage son and although he had only a few words of English and I had just a few words of Spanish we were getting on really well. He had a record collection of British and American bands which he was very proud of. We were having a few beers and listening to the Stones, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and the other great bands of the time.
I have always liked the voice of Mama Cass so I asked him did he have anything by the Mamas and Papas. He disappeared for a while then came back with a plate of chips. I ate the chips, had a few more beers and after about an hour asked him if he had forgotten about the Mamas and Papas. Once again he came back with more chips. Only then did it dawn on me that the Spanish for chips is papas fritas. By this time a lot of the bar girls had woken up and they were falling over the tables with laughing so much.
So with a good drink, a belly full of chips and a happy day I made my way back.

Louis, JC a quite time in the Skandi bar, 'no is possible ' I reckon the owner of that bar would have made a fortune out of the sailors on the WCSA run & good luck to him.
