Do the current lot of 'seamen' know as much as we did in our time.
Do they go far correct style training, or indeed any training at all.
Makes one wonder where they come from, is it a case of anyone can join, we will teach you as we go, well maybe!!!!!!
I think that if you subjected the modern youth (not all I may add) to what was experienced on Vindi or other training establishments (some were tougher) then there would be very few people going to sea at all in this day and age.

The Mexican ship in question is normally manned by 3rd year marine students for practical seagoing experience prior to entering Naval and Merchant service. Alas accidents do happen, and 'fail safe' procedures or equipment are not always that.

    Hi Ivan.
You are right, one cannot compare a steamship out of control in a confined space with a sailing ship under full sail, one has to be on ones toes in a close situation , that is why I think they where caught out with engine failure.
I was on the wheel of the Bounty coming up Sydney Harbour when this super tanker was exiting, the Skipper told me to go well to port of her in case the displacement of water drew us closer. That sailing ship would have had an experienced Captain on board. so for some reason he couldn't stop must have happened.
