An update on #2.
Australia fires: State of emergency declared for Canberra region
The raging bushfires blazing outside Canberra are threatening to merge into a megablaze, as they break containments lines and bear down on thousands of homes. Officials warned the fires will likely tear across the NSW border, and could even merge again with the Good Good fire in the east. Those living in the southern suburbs of Banks, Gordon and Conder were told to leave if they feel unsafe to escape the Orroral Valley fire, just 30km from Canberra. At lunchtime on Saturday, an emergency warning was issued for the Clear Range fire, which has launched an ember attack on two border towns. Authorities fear the fire could replicate the fatal conditions of 2003, when 500 homes were destroyed by a megablaze which killed four people. Temperatures are set to reach 41C, creating near-impossible conditions for firefighters. The Orroral Valley fire southeast of Canberra is covering around 33,000 hectares, while the Clear Range fire is smaller but dangerously out-of-control.
Since September, bushfires in Australia have killed at least 33 people and destroyed thousands of homes. More than 11 million hectares of land has been scorched.

Re: The truth about australia`s bush fires
Just a little story which in a way is attached to this site. The fires are now 15 kilometers away in a place called Breadbow, we used to go through there along the Monaro Highway to get to Canberra. A little way along there, there was a road that turned off the Monaro Highway called Bumalong Rd, and I always wanted to take a photo of it and post it on site, just for the name, there are about fourteen letter boxes on the side of Bumalong so there must be a few farms down there, unfortunately there is a nasty bend in the Highway so I was never unable to stop to take the picture. Last night on the news a huge grass fire had hit the houses in Bumalong, luckily or unluckily only one house burnt down, it showed firies at one house being beaten back by flames burning down the stables, and then burning up to the brick work of the house, as they only had grass there they saved it. It brought the fires much closer to home watching Bumalong Rd being in the line of fire.

Re: The truth about australia`s bush fires
On the news today there was an article about some of the early fire spots in Queensland where damage has been cleared and rebuilding of some properties has begun.
But fort some it will take much longer, months even years in some instances.
But clearance has begun in a couple of spots here in Gippsland, the other problem will be finding enough builders willing to go that far out to build.
A number of people have said they will take the insurance, sell the land when they can , and move else where.

Re: The truth about australia`s bush fires
I see in my local paper that help is being sent to Australia by the British fire service, which i thought would be. They will not fight fires, but help in other areas, kt

Re: The truth about australia`s bush fires
The battle against the bushfires should focus our attention on the war against climate inaction.

Two city fire trucks sent down to help fight the fires were caught in the middle of a country road and had a flash over, it was all on TV as they had internal cameras , both trucks air brakes burnt up and the trucks were stalled in the middle of the fire, they thought they were going to die, then after a bit of a panic they decided to put on their hazmat suits and walk out, that was when their particular training kicked in. There was hell to pay as to who sent them down to a bush fire area, maybe a crossed wire somewhere.

Re: The truth about australia`s bush fires
Help has come from Canada and USA, both experience fires similar to ours.
In return we send some of ours to assist them when needed.
It shows how cooperative nations can be in times of crisis.

Re: The truth about australia`s bush fires
Apparently, widespread rain is forecast for much of New South Wales with warnings in place for severe weather and possible flooding in some parts of the state.
An initial flood watch is in place for possible riverine flooding along the coastal rivers from the Tweed to the Hastings from Thursday.
A surface trough over central NSW and Queensland was beginning to bring rainfall in areas from Goondawindi to Coonamble on Wednesday.
Heavier falls are expected along the north and north-east coast of NSW on Thursday and Friday before the rain extends southwards into Sydney and the South Coast over the weekend.

ADDED:
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Hundreds of people evacuated their homes and farms Wednesday to escape flooding in southern New Zealand.
Authorities told many residents in the towns of Gore, Mataura and Wyndham they should leave immediately as rivers continued to rise following heavy rainfall.
