I well remember the Scouse barber in Port Said- my first trip on a Moss Huchison boat and homesick as hell was overjoyed to hear the accent from so far away until the next customer was being shorn ( a Geordie) and the barber was chatting away in HIS dialect. I felt a bit cheated but full of admiration for his language skills.

I can remember cutting hair.Hadnt got a clue but had some clippers.
One trip ,I think it was on the esso Saranac we had a first tripper who,s pride and joy was a tony Curtis hair style(or was it elvis ?)and I offered to trim his hair .He was horrified but I pointed out that once in the tropics he would be uncomfortable.This went on for a few days until finally his head was getting hot so he asked me to give him a "trim".I sat him down away from a mirror and proceeded to do my best.None of the crew had ever taken advantage of my services but all swore that they had.
The upshot of all this was that I gave a deep haircut and for the rest of the trip we called him Audrey Hepburn(in those days she sported short hair)
He never paid me
Never quite understood the motive for a male sporting a pony tail- they do look attractive when applied to the fairer sex- Sandra Dee and Doris Day spring to mind. Seems to be the older man who appears to have a statement to make whilst wearing one- i've always maintained that-what do you see when you lift up a pony's tail.............Quote:

On the Metro today there was a guy who was the wrong side of middle age with his beard plaited into a Unicorns horn, about a foot long, jutting out from his chin. Never seen such a daft thing, especially as the rest of his fizzog was clean shaven.
Marian, like I guess a number of the rest here, I'm bald, do I get a look-in? LOL

On my first ship we had a big red headed North Welshman who had a huge beard to go with his wild hair. He had it cut one day, and unknown to most this first trip cabin boy collected it all; the cabin boy was a bit of a gymnast; he could put his legs over his shoulders and walk on his hands. unbeknownst to some he got some soft soap and made a full face mask with the hair and beard, I was the first to get caught, coming of the wheel at 8 pm I was walking along the boat deck when this thing crawling on his hands came out from under the lifeboat I froze then ran like hell, when I got there terrified everyone down aft was laughing their heads off, until someone asked where he had gone, he had gone up to the forecastle to frighten the bloke on lookout, well we only got there in time; I think he was ready to jump overboard.
