    Hi Bill,

Did you meet a Robin Harvey? He was on the Southern Cross? He was an Able Seaman on the Southern Cross on 6th June, 1965. I was a passenger on her when she left Southampton 6th June, 1965. She was bound for Wellington,NZ

He was probably between 20-24 years of age. He came from LYMINGTON, HAMPSHIRE, NEW FOREST. He might still live there or perhaps live in NEW MILTON, Hampshire.

Or maybe someone else might know Robin?? I hope you might be able to help me.

If someone knows of Robin you can contact me here where a a post can be done or at my email address

    Have a nice day.

There are many stories aboyt the 'Cross' most of them horrific. Here in Oz there are still some who remember some of the things crew members got up to. But i recall one time she arrived in Southampton when I was working by on a castle liner. Not sure if it was the crew or passengers or both but she had been trashed with more than 100 doors thta needed replacing. Not the best ship around.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Hi Vernon 1. Was just looking at your last years thread June.re S/c I found that ship quite good done 2 trips in 59 and 4 straight 60-61. Needed to have a good table(s) if wingingto be able to support good times int the pig. I had the Doctor's table (he never helped out ) but was a good guy to get along with, the rest of the table were all full fare paying that helped. A good friend that I jioned the S/C with stayed with "her" for several years after I left. take care Vernon 2.

G'day Jack, just working my way through the forums and came across the Sufferin' cross bit. You were lucky to escape with a quickie. A mate of mine Billy Hitchins by name rang me to say he was on the "cross" and as we had not sailed together for a while why didn't I sign on. The only job going was bathroom steward a nightmare trying to organise the "bloods" bath times. We went ashore in Trinidad to a night club called the Miramar where my mate was stabbed to death by one of the cooks. He then came after me but the goons on the door saved my bacon. The upshot was I identified the swine and he was carted off to the calaboose.I had to stay on the island for the trial. He only got 3 years, which I must say I wouldn't fancy in a Trinidadian nick. Port of Spain is Ok I worked in a posh tourist hotel for a year there before signing on the Golfito homeward bound.

I sailed on the Cross same voyage it was my last trip on her after 10 voyages being Engineer sorry cannot help with your friend.
i read some of the comments about the Cross and do not understand as she was a great ship to sail on and most of the engine room crew singed on regularly, on average we would have two - three new staff in engine room each voyage then they would turn up next voyage very few ever logged most problems always with deck catering staff.

    Cheers

Was it Capt. Lloyd who had the "follow the cockroach and mark the bulkhead where it disappears " fetish , the whole ship had loads of marks . If i remember him correctly he had a real thing about cleanliness .
