greetings vernon. with reference to the arethusa. i hope you were refering to the site as quite new, as the ship is very old. i found a medal in my garden when i was about seven, unfortunatly lost now. it was the hms arethusa. my parents moved into this house in 1930 a new property so the medal must have been lost in the fields that were there previously. do you know how old she is and was she royal navy?. cheers. alf

Yes indeed Alf i was referring to the site that seems to be quite new!

Pity about loosing that Medal Alf,would have been a really good keepsake,and could have been worth a bit too!

For a very long time when I was young she was located at Upnor on the Medway very close to where we live and I was lucky to have been able to visit her a couple of times..Just after the war we became a one parent family Mum being left with 3 young sons .It was always a job to make ends meet Like many others and it was strongly mooted that it might be a good idea if I was encouraged to join the school..It was one of the many opportunities opened to less well of kids..I never understood why the ship was taken away from the area and moved .. Finance I presume ... There was until recently an Arethusa sports/activities centre still at upnor I must find out more of her history....Regards, Alan

Had two cousins who were orphaned and place on board her. Geoff and Doug Gower, both became time served in the 'Old Grey Funnel Line'. When I went for my medical and I.Q. for the R.N. they both gave me a 'slapping' hence me joining the M.N. Sometimes wonder if they done me a favour. Met lots of great blokes had lots of fun, met a smashing girl from Cardiff whose been alongside now for 49 yrs so yeah maybe they did. Mind you if I had gone R.N. might of had a good pension. Mike

I had some mates who had been on the training ship' Arethusa', as far as I could gather it was even worse than the gestapo camp 'Worchester'. Thank God those days are behind us and no one else will suffer as we did. (rowing a 2.5 ton gig in a 4.5 kt ebb).

I was on the Arethusa in the mid 50,s number 80. I had the time of my life for 2years and can only praise the officers that taught us. I subsequently ended up as 3rd Mate on cargo ships. ian.
