I was on the Darro in about 1962. Did two trips. One out to Montevideo light ship, loaded in Monte and BA before back to Pneumonia corner Vic Docks. 7 weeks start to finish. Then outbound loaded potatoes in Belgium for Rio, up to Santos for bananas which all ripened in the holds on the way to BA. 2 weeks in BA Roads chucking them all over the wall. Clean ship for beef homewards from BA and Rosario. Top up with lamb in Monte then home. 14 weeks round trip. Good old RML, unpredictable.
Didn't much like the old Darro. Too old, too slow and things kept breaking down. I'd just come from the Loch Loyal so had been a bit spoiled. Still, rough with the smooth. Happy days.
