Voreda seaman's accident near New Orleans 1938
Hello, I've just joined this site and would be very grateful if anyone could help me find out about the above-mentioned ship and its crew - especially my grandfather, John "Paddy" Doyle from Wexford.
My mother (his daughter) has a handwritten note he wrote in which he described falling on deck while he was climbing to do a painting job. The accident happened two years before Mam was born and he was brought across the Atlantic before he saw a doctor in France (who recommended amputation of his leg - my grandad heard the word "jambe" and refused treatment!).
He apparently went back to sea as he was away when Mam was born, but he suffered from gangrene in that leg and died of a heart attack in 1952.
He seems to have had a very adventurous life at sea and several times relied on the Salvation Army when he was in between ships (he literally "sang for his supper", setting aside the fact that these were Protestant hymns and he a devout Catholic!) and my mother has always felt a strong affection for the Salvation Army for saving him from starvation whilst teaching him to sing beautifully.
My mother also recalls his telling her King George visited a ship on which he served, but I'm not sure if it was the Voreda.
Any info at all about the Voreda and her crew, life on board, etc, would be most welcome.

The 1938 crew agreement for Voreda, Official Number 164049, is obtainable for a fee here: https://mha.mun.ca/mha/holdings/view...cial_No=164049 The ship's log does not appear to have survived. More info on the ship here: https://www.clydeships.co.uk/view.ph...&vessel=VOREDA

Hello Geraldine
Would this be him at all , not sure as you dont give DOB?
R230304 DOYLE J 11/11/1910 CASTLEBRIDGE WEXFORD. NOTE: date of birth stated on pouch as... | The National Archives
If it is then this would be his Seamans Pouch, which will hold Basic info.
You would need his CRS10 for a fuller Service Record, and which also may contain the Incident in question, So up to you to decide if you would spend Money for this . Applying to the National Archives would be the way to go!
I will lookup the Link for his CRS10 once i get confirmation it is the person you seek nfo on>
Cheers
Just in addition to wightspirit, Posting.
Wee bit more info on obtaining the Crew Records.
Cheers

Hi Geraldine
Thanks for the PM reply, here is the Link for which i feel is the correct one for his CRS10 Records.
If and when applying please also quote his Seamans Pouch Reference Number
Good Luck.
Please keep us updated on how things go.
Cheers
Downing A to Doyle J T | The National Archives Years 1941 to 1972
As there are sometimes different Cards for different Years , there is the possibility that if he does not have a CRS10 in the above Link, then there should be one in the Link below, for War Years 1941 to 1946
Doyle Johanna Monica to Doyle Thomas E P | The National Archives
