When I was first wrongfully diagnosed with lung cancer, I was very angry with the Idea of shipowners mining companies etc. who had just ignored for years (The first tumours caused by asbestos were diagnosed and recognised in 1943) The danger of asbestos, it has been common knowledge for years. From being diagnosed until death can take from about 4 to 18 months of a very nasty disease. Unfortunately the victim normally dies before any compensation is paid, the majority of seamen I sailed with were not whingers or moaners they took the occupational hazards of their day to day jobs as a routine risk. Added hazards like dangerous cargo were normally compensated by a financial bonus (War zone, tanker bonus etc.) It makes my blood boil that a shipowner would allow a ship to carry asbestos and put a workforce in such a dangerous environment and then take no moral responsibility for the consequences. If you fo to the National Archives site and Type in a Ships name (In the Movement Section) they have many Ships Movement Crads, that was you can see if one or more went to the Ports mentioned. At present its a free Service to those who Join up.

Francis This is just a snippet from one Card and shows the Ship to Cape Town , Durban , and also Freemantle.
There are 15 pages i downloaded so cannot post all.
Even though the dates may not be correct this is just to show that he more than likely did go to those places on various Ships, but as said this is just one Ship i choose at random (Perseus)

If you are looking for those dates though i am afraid they wont have them, as it only covers the War Years from about 39 to 45 so i am led to believe .
Later Cards can be obtained at a price from the Guildhall Library , called Voyage Record Cards .

Our main sources for shipping movements are Lloyd's List, a newspaper in which movements of ocean-going vessels were reported and the Lloyd’s Voyage Record Cards. Casualties and other incidents were also reported.
Shipping movements were recorded in Lloyd’s List from 1741- 2003. Movements were indexed by vessel name from 1838 – 1975 and Guildhall Library holds these on microfilm and on the Voyage Cards (c1927-1975).
Advance ordering is required for Voyage Record Cards with a minimum of five days’ notice. Please write or e-mail your request in vessel name order with the dates required.
If you are looking for convoy movements; we offer exclusive access to the Convoys Database in the library. This resource is searchable by vessel name, convoy number, port and date for World War Two and by convoy number and vessel name for World War One.

Asbestos, if left alone can be harmless, but in most instances it is in the open.
When at the Uni there was a small building that was full of the stuff.
Attempts were made to remove it but there was so much and in such poor condition they just locked it up and bricked up the windows.
Said at the time it was the safest way to go.
That was way back in about 1988, not sure how it all ended.
