curry at sea
never had a curry in my life till I went to sea .....the ist curry shop in shields was on ocean road called the star of india but I didn't eat there till after I had been to sea and must say my ist curry on a trampwas the most remembered taste I could ever imagine ...could have lived on it for the rest of my life ......going adriftone time for 5 or 6 days I lived on boiled egg curry and saki the end product was anexplosion like the 3rd atom bomb in Nippon......cant get enough of it ...in shields today there are at least 15 curry shops in a row on ocean road ....I have always had the feeling there is only one kitchen at the bacl lane and thr=e waiters just run up and down in a secret tunnel......ican recall a ships cook opened a little retaurantin shiilds market ...it was called the red cloak his curry was proper ships curry ...when home from sea I lived there ....sadly he disappeared and was not seen in shields again ......getting hungry just thinking about it .....were did you get your best currylads regards cappy

Re: curry at sea
sadly he disappeared and was not seen in shields again
.
He may have ended up in one of your curries Cappy.
.
. I never ever eat curries out. only what I make myself.
It hides loads of crap, you neVer know what is really in it. Some of these "OVERSEAS " people delight in putting crap into the infidels dinners. One near me a while ago was found guilty of putting used condoms in and ciggy ends when all the drunks turned up on a Saturday night. YUK!!!!. At the best, Nothing is ever wasted in Catering, all the scraps and left overs off plates are put in curries, saves them a lot of money. It is all recycled. Even Cats and Dogs have ended up in some of our curries here.

Re: curry at sea
Curry... on Indian crewed ships. Was always one of the courses every day. Cochin, Madras, Dahl curry and rice. Indian crews had to have their Dahl. Every day of the week was a different curry. Answered your email cappy but don't know if has gone or not, just to acknowledge had received yours. Cheers John Sabourn

Re: curry at sea
Well Cappy I make a good Curry, nice and spicy and Hot too! I like it that way! (Women too haha!)
But the best Curry I can recall eating (not at Sea sorry)was when I was working at the Catcracker Unit (Caltex) in Durban South Africa,we were lagging Pipes there and it was hot!
Anyway there was this Mobile Van that came around each day with just Curries!
I used to order a Red Curry,it was soooooo delicious, hot as hell and yes very very Red in colour!
Took the top of ones head off I may say,and the perspiration from the top of the head mate!
Yes indeed one of the best!
The other one I loved was the Piecod also in Durban that sold Bunny Chows,i loved the Bean Bunnies!
For those who may not know a Bunny Chow is a Curry put into a Half Loaf of Bread, the flesh of the bread is first taken out,Curry filled and then the Flesh of the bread put back! Yummy to eat,but makes a wee bit of a mess haha!
Cheers

Re: curry at sea
The first curry i had was at Gravesend Sea School. The week we worked in the galley we were well fed,the captain used to like curry and rice once a week so the cook did extra and we were able to have it for our tea.Did'nt think much of curry at sea in fact I gave it a wide berth having witnessed what went into it when I was galley boy.I had the job of putting all kinds of odds and ends through the mincer to go into the curry. With a cook from Swansea on the Oregis his curry was realy good the beef was in inch cubes so no rubbish there.
Regards.

Re: curry at sea
best curry i ever had was on the P&O`s Arcadia (1953) the Goanese had their own kitchen and mess room, curry was on most of the day but always a different one, the best of which and my favorite was the "Dry veg and fruit curry" i can taste it now, we used to eat in their mess quite often.
When i got married (2nd time) our honeymoon was on the Canberra where i could eat a different curry every day of the 21 day med. cruise, I thought i was in heaven.
I don`t think anyone can make curry like those boys, both the south african and carribean curries just don`t compare.
