i was in port line about the same time as youself, did you come across a mad bo:son call mad mac the best seaman i ever sailed under

I was on the Port Napier at the time 1964/74 and the Kent Arms plenty hangovers lol

Hi Glenn, I was peggy & JOS aboard Port Pirie Nov 63 to oct 64. I was born and brought up in Silvertown so know the area very well. In fact I went over there just last week (08/02/11) and it's a sad sight. The Round House is still there but you wouldn't know by looking that it had ever been a pub. It's all shut down. The California is still going, but the Kent Arms is long gone.
There is nothing left of the entire Royal Docks. All warehouses, cranes, roads, pubs, offices, all gone. In its place- between KG5 and Royal Albert Dock is now the runway for the London City Airport. Very sad day out.:(

I remember rhe roundhouse well & the kent up the road in the early sixties. We also used the railway & another the custom house near the flying angel This was when we were on the Rangi boats & Shaw savilles
Ceramic which was at k.g.5 close to the roundhouse as well as blue star ships.
As far as i know the k.g. & victoria docks are now used for pleasure boats, jet skis etc. and the inner
London docklands airport is where the dock facilities used to be. Last time i drove there about eight years
ago the customs house area by silvertown station looked very run down & drab but they were building com-
muter flats for the city workers.....cheers

Stewart, I bet the traffic, when you drove, was different to the 40'sand 50's when you'd hop on the red trolley bus at Aldgate for Silvertown or the No.15 double decker Ladboke Grove/East Ham bus going along Connought Road (maybe hopping off at Salmon Lane!) then the Manor Way bus if you were going to the eastern end of KG V. Bought my first Burbury at Gardners Corner in that arctic winter of 47/48.

Yes Richard what memories of the old trolley bus and the good old tram. All around the Woolwich area the trolleys ran, they were great and a pity they no longer run. What a place Woowich was in those days all hustle and bustle, get the ferry across or walk the tunnel. I presume both are still there, had an uncle worked as mate on the ferries for years after he swallowed the anchor.

Walked the Woolwich Tunnel many times John. What about the double-decker trams that used come down by Australia House under Kingsway and Somerset House, Aldwych and on to The Embankment. Stopped in 1952. My Dad came to Australia in 1924, was born at Tower Hamlets and lived at Forest Gate in London. He never went back but he was always eager to chew the fat with me when I docked in Sydney.

Hi Graham. I was on the Port Pirie the same time as you were.3rd June 64 - 28th March 65, I was Galley Boy and Pantry Boy. I wonder if we know each other as we live in the same town?? Take care..... Terry. :confused:

KG5....Harrison coasting voyages..long time ago now.The Roundhouse, was that the one outside the dock gates with the Blue Post across the road...... lunch time pubs I think, too many faries and queens in the evening, though the cat fights at closing time were entetaining
