Which ship?

Hi All.

Sorry a very foggy photo dated mid late 1940's believed to be the troop ship on which Dad returned from India. Maybe one of the Straths? Any ideas?

Very hard to tell by the Photo,but could possibly be the Starthallen ?? Will look into it and see what comes up in my collection

#1... May of been even the same ship as my father came back from India on Hazel. He never spoke of the ship though, only that a lot of the troops threw a lot of stuff over the side before arrival the UK as were told they would be paying a lot of duty on. He brought home a cattle stock whip and for years I thought it was one used by the Japanese to whip the POWs , disappeared during all our movements over the years. Regards JS

Memory of - Ernest Graham Rutherford
National Service number 1908762 Ernest Graham Rutherford DOB 6th April 1923 (now living at 13 Walton place, Chesterton, Newcastle, Staffs, ST5 4QY) - Was transferred from KOYLI in 1947 to DLI
1947 Set sail from Southampton in the June on SS Almanzora , an old troupe ship had hammocks in), destination to Port Said Egypt to Suez Canal (10day) in transit camp then moved to bottom of Suez Canal. Then on train to top of Suez awaiting for ship to Thessaloniki Greece, stayed there till 1948 transferred back on SS Sithier(??spelling) arrived back Liverpool and de-mobbed at York. April/May 1948.

Hi Doc,

Having posted this I dug out my Dad's war photo album and found he came back on the Monarch of Bermudain 1947, This is reallystrange as my husband's Dad came home on the same ship in 1945! It is a small world. If my photo is the Strathallen then it was my uncle's ship he was a chef on board for most of the war.

Hazel pretty sure that the ship in your photograph is not the Strathallan. The ship in your photo has a distinct cut out single section of the main deck at the stern. The Strathallan differs completely in that area.

Thanks Chris - that rings a vague bell in my memory too. Maybe it is my other uncle's ship. We were lucky in that both served throughout the war and neither were hurt or sunk in spite of some close calls.
