Re: The Trumpet has blown
I invested in the stock market about 50 years ago. I got a hot-tip from who I thought was a brilliant investor, a hot tip on a stock. She told me she was cashing in on everything she and buying a stock called Continental Airlines. So having listened to her gloating of the money she made. I raised everything I could and bought all the stock I could of this dead cert.
The gods of gluttony and greed were sitting and waiting for me, lying dead for me. No sooner had I made the purchase, it started a slow slide from the $33.00 per share I had bought it for to hover between $1 and $3 dollars per share, I rode the mongrel all the way down. All pigs end up in the slaughterhouse.
From then on it was the bank for me. I made one very good hit in real estate. I bought a nice house, which I lived in for about ten years before I retired, The I rented it out to corporations to house their overseas executives and family in the USA for a year or two. I knew their employees wouldn't dare to mess it up. I finally sold it and made about three times what I paid for it, so I was grinning. And I left my money in the banks, in Bank Certificates of Deposits, which I still do.
No risk-Rodney

Hi Les
Oh yes indeed i will keep al my Stocks, as all of them plus a few ETF.s are all in Gold Mining Shares and although gone down but just a wee bit, i know that with the price of Gold climbing they will soon recover. Thus far though i can say i have made a substantial profit over the Years.
And like Rodney, we too invested in this House we own (Fully Paid) and at present it is now worth over three times what we initially paid for it! So no complaints here !
Cheers
Re: The Trumpet has blown
Unfortunatly for Rodney he fell into that old trap of putting all his eggs in one basket. I too have a few shares that have been a loss to me and still are but hanging in there. Miind you they will be good to offset the old CGT if I need to sell any. As said before I consider the home a bad investment money wise as it is the only one that does not return a dividend or income over the life I have owned it. In fact the expensis that it incurs just keep going up each year and the only profit it will generate is after I kick the bucket. Its value is only in the security it gives me. Purchase for twenty grand now worth around 650k but wish I was still paying all the expensis at the intial price and not it latest one

Re: The Trumpet has blown
Agree in a Way Les but remember your Home is one of your Biggest Assetts, as you know, therefore even though one doesnt see Dividends etc, it grows a lot faster than other things. Like you we only bought in 2010 here (Penrith Before) but as i said already up three times what we paid, thats good Invest! Bought at 345000 and now worth about 1.1 Mill. Not bad for 15 Years ! Spent about $45000 all told on New Kitchen, Bathroom, and Decking, but well worth it all.
I am so far lucky that my shares although down in the latest Hump turmoil, are actually still up overall. I also have a few Shares also in Gold, on the Toronto Stock Exchange, those Mining Stocks are good!
Lastly my Coins i own in the Crypto World, just sitting waiting for the Big Boom, if it ever arrives! LOL
If the Coin goes up from the present level of $3,25 to say $ 100 which has been talked about now for quite some time , Oh Boy! Then its Payday! As i have 1073 Coins in all.
Cheers
And lastly i own part Shares in a Horse, had its first Run on Saturday , came in Fourth on Debut! Not bad at all.
His name is Neptunite! Trained by Gai Waterhouse!
So who knows what his future hold! A Black Gelding Superb looking Fella!!
Cheers

Re: The Trumpet has blown
This all very well the rising value of your house, think of the costs of whatever smaller house you may seek. They rise correspondently Then there are the costs of selling and buying , the government charges on any profits you are expecting , the council rates , the maintainance as you get older and have to employ someone to do, overall I went into it in detail and came to the conclusion we would be better off and better served in a retirement village and up until now have been proved right . No rates , no maintainance , no gardening as such as all done weekly, entertainment if you want , free transport to shopping centres if don’t drive anymore , medical services available if required on site. If you want to move then there is a returnable fixed price on what one paid for the property. Your monthly fee is a fraction of what most people pay for a mortgage , and is fixed at 30% of the old age pension per month ,the Australian one that is. I can if so inclined save more money than I ever did proportionally I did when working. An owned property can be a noose around some peoples neck for life. I wish I had known more when I arrived in Australia as was over 50 and eligible for a retirement village and think of all those lawns I had to mow of the 3 property’s I owned and at various times lived in. At the end of the day we are all wise after the event. JS
Re: The Trumpet has blown
All Told we have owned seven houses in NZ and Aus, only lost a little on the last time in NZ. I would say we are not by any means rich except in life, but we manage a good life.
Vern I knew Gay Waterhouse when she came back from her acting career in the UK, I met her at the races in Rosehill she used to give me tips, I also knew her Dad Tom Smith one of the best trainers in Australia of that era, my dream was to own or part own a horse, I had offers but didn't have the cash, I never missed a Golden Slipper at Rosehill in around twenty years, I also knew Biorn Baker who won the Doncaster on Saturday, former Kiwi same as Waller.
Cheers Des
Ps Lovely looking horse. What's its name?
Re: The Trumpet has blown
Des if you ever get a cheeky taxi driver who says when being paid “ what about a tip then “ the well known reply to such is “ be kind to your Mother” . JS

Hi Rod
I see on TV the trouble has started in the US as people realize that these Tariffs will hit them as hard as the people it is directed at. Do you think that he will be pulled up a tad?
Des
Re: The Trumpet has blown
Rod will know more than anyone outside of the USA, but I would have thought he is the type of person who will accept no others comments , and will go down with the ship with his MAGA cap on saluting. JS
