That sort of reminds me of the possibly apocryphal ,but still somehow quite believable,knowing how parsimonious and totally business orientated was Daniel K.Ludwig,(he of National Bulk Carriers fame) anecdote
When being shown plans of one of his pioneering early 'supertankers',in the 1950's by his Naval Architect,Ludwig pointed to the streamlined funnels and asked what they were".Funnels,sir" replied the N.A. nervously." Well,do they carry oil?"retorted Ludwig. "No,of course not,sir,"replied the flustered N.A." Well in that case,I don't want them",said Ludwig.
And that's why a generation of large Ludwig's NBC tankers had stovepipe funnels inflicted upon them.
