Expensive
Saw an article on the net today about the cost of some meals in UK.
You may be aware of it.
According to the article some have gone up by very large amounts.
Fish and chips by 52% !!!!!
Indian and Chinese by 26%
Pizza by about 35%.
But where do the figures come from?
We used a small pub around the corner of our hotel for a beer most nights and had fish and chips one night.
We had similar the year before and the price was still on my travelcard account.
It had only gone up by about 11% , so what is the true figure

Re: Expensive
Energy costs is the main reason also labour costs.
As far as take away meals, not often we have them but portion sizes seem to have gone up as well.
If it is fish and chips I will only get a one portion of chips between the two of us, even then some are left over.
Not a fan of battered fish usually long time no swim.
Weather also has had an impact on a lot of foods.
The cost of Olive oil has more than doubled in the last 12 months, reason is due to the recent summers in the likes of Greece, Spain and Italy were most of our Olive oil comes from, same with Sweet Peppers etc!
Weather has even had an impact on food production here as well this year it has been really wet raining a lot. This led to farmers not getting fields prepared for planting as fields in a lot of ares were flooded so they could not be ploughed for planting. Again a wet spring seed was just rotting in the ground, this will lead to low yields so the grain milled for flour is expensive. Take into account the the war in Ukraine has had a knock on effect in grain prices and as mentioned weather plays a big part on what you get on your plate and how much you pay.
Surely Australia is experiencing similar issues?

Re: Expensive
Yes we are, olive oil price has gone mad due to crop failure in Spain this year.
We import about 60% of supermarket foods so with the Red sea problem it takes longer to get here and cost increase.
Some weather problems have pushed veg prices but that is beginning to ease now.
One major problem is the global population numbers, we need to feed more each year and with weather problems some areas have had great difficulty in continuing supply.
If the ;Greens; get their way and ban refrigeration then we will all be in trouble.

Thankfully the Greens here are more or less a voice in the wilderness.
Greens drop plans to ration meat and dairy
I remember my wife decided once to go meat free, she even persuaded my son Quorn Burgers or sausages were better and tastier.
We went to watch Tranmere Rovers football team one Saturday, I said at half time do you fancy a burger? mum says I am not to eat meat he was 8 at the time. He woofed it down. When he got home he politely told mum no more of them Quorn burgers or sausgaes for that matter.
Again I was doing myself a Rib Eye steak, the wife finally cracked , give me a piece and I will see if I can get back to eating meat. End of the meat free diet.
I often do meat free meals for us , had a Butternut Squash curry last night.
I have noticed the older I get the less red meat I eat, also I do eat a lot more green veg.
Veg is cheap as I grow my own have enough spuds to get through to the end of the year, same with herbs as I grow them year round, Basil , Flat leaf parsley etc.
