Riots in the UK

The real problem is the levelling down of our living standards. We were doing OK until the EU was invented by the fatcats, then things changed.
The powers that be (fatcats, not bolloticians, coz that's who run things) decided there would be loadsamoney to be made if the labour force in the EU were paid less, hence the joining of those Eastern European countries, and free movement.
The promise of levelling up, only included the least wealthy workers from the east, so they happily moved freely to the west. They were given the opportunity to earn big money by their standards, thus "levelling up".
Of course our own workers saw their own jobs go to cheap foreign workers, and were naturally "levelled down".
All this time, illegal migrants were piling in, to the joy of the fatcats. Even cheaper labour abounded, housing became hard to find for Brits that were worse off than anyone for decades before.
Many people can't understand how these riots came about, the same goes for Brexit. Mind you, it's often a case of not wanting to understand, or admit what they do actually know.
And now it's all a mystery as to why these riots are going on. It's actions and reactions, pencils anybody?

add to that all the industries that were closed down here and moved to cheaper parts of europe - classic example = North Shields, Twinings Tea. Opened new premises with subsidised establishment, ran for a relatively short time until offered a better deal in eastern europe so closed down, paid everyone off and moved - still there I believe.
A friend of mine was works engineer at Wilkinson Sword (razor blades) factory in Cramlington, closed and moved production to German factory. He said that if his production machinery availability fell below 95% there was hell to pay and yet the German factory never got better than 85%, so it begs the question, "why close the best plant?"; purely because it was easier to make UK people redundant, than Germans. These were not isolated cases e.g. Coles Cranes Sunderland, Timex Dundee etc etc.

Great post from someone who obviously knows. Many UK companies did the same, simply because it was easier to get rid of people. I worked on the transport at Ford, and it's exactly what happened there. I was lucky, with just a few months to go and got a golden payoff, but things are never going to be the same there since.

#57. Tony your ref. to smaller businesses , is Ringtons tea still in existence. They used to deliver to the door , and all my married life in the uk is what we used, even have all the China van models with Ringtons on the side. Was supposed to be made to suit the special NE water supply. Cheers with a drop of whiskey in double cheers. JS

Johnny Kieran, in response to your comments, you are not alone when it comes to the stupidity of “upper echelon” in the government ranks.
Canada funnels all the best contracts and huge financial aid packages to the French portion of Canada. (hmm Trudeau leans that way too).

The only way things will resolve in both the UK and here in Canada is for us old farts to remind the younger generation how they got what they have now. Most “boomers” as they call us are slowly losing backbone and motivation to do the right thing. If not us,.....then who?

My grandkids have a really messed up place to live and grow up in, and it is getting worse by the day. They have no idea how to fix a bloody light switch, let alone a country we let politicians screw up.
Canada just had the wisdom to block most of the “prospective immigrants” from coming to schools and universities to study and then apply for citizenship. This was Turdeu’s idea to curb the amount of people coming here to ease the housing crisis, and over burdened health care systems. ?????? Smart people never did vote his way.

The UK is in the same boat. Bring in the educated/skilled and curb the ones who are looking for minimalistic life styles. We all need ambition, not slackers. We have a major problem with workers from impoverished countries (without pointing fingers). They have undercut local workers in all ways of employment, and wages. They are not looking for a standard of living that we earned by hard work. They are manipulating the system to work in their favour to get more of their countrymen employed.

If more people took a stand and “used” the system we have to fix the problems of the past, we might survive the decimation of a hard earned and fought for lifestyle in both countries. We don’t need radicals or tough guys. We need people to stand up and be counted to fix crap at the top tier.

“Take out the trash” as they say, and stomp on the right winger radicals and yob’s of old and maybe people will listen to reason. At least now the UK can limit some, without the “freebie” EU passport. We have millions with Canadian passports who came and got them; then left for home until they need to run.

Fully paid to “repatriate” the poor souls from oppression, just like the brides who want to come home after they made a “mistake”.

I was in Montreal every 6 weeks for the best part of a year, the office was 1060 University street and that end of the highway more Anglo Saxon than the lower end which was the French Quarter who still thought General Wolfe was still fighting General Montcalm, and suppose that feeling is still there ? I was in Montreal during the Expo of 1967 was it , and although Harold Wilson had put a maximum of think it was either 40 or 50 pounds leaving the Uk there were still thousands of uk citizens there, just shows how level the governments of whatever description are. I arrived in Australia permanently in 1991 and found the working conditions here were cheese and chalk with the uk but over the past 30 + years have deteriorated to a great extant due to my thinking of extreme bad management by the so called upper echelons of whatever party is in power. Think the ordinary man in the street has as much if not more know how than all of them put together. Cheers JS

Yes Ringtons still going, tea, coffee, biscuits etc.

Just a little vignette regarding ringtons tea ,other brands are available, one of the main commodities being imported through the port of Tyne is tea, in fact I recall reading somewhere that the Tyne is the major u.k. port for tea imports.

Just a wee bit off here but must add that i still love my Rooibos Tea, its got a lovely Tangy taste, and is very high in Anti Oxidants too

Just to go back to the begging letters for a minute. Over the last three months we have been inundated with begging letters from these people wanting money for African children etc, but as I know most of what is collected is spent on excessive wages for he managers of these so called agencies, an example from when we where building a big prison we collected over thousands of dollars on one building site, from contractors doing the wrong thing by their workers,we found that the girl who came around to collect the money for this charity; said with it being the most collected she would get a trip overseas as a prize, needless to say she didn't get the money, we went to a small hospital in the one of the poorer suburbs but they couldn't take the cash, but gave us a list of things we could donate, like wheelchairs and at least one special bed, which we did. gees I still remember the feeling it was so good.
