Anyone who thinks war is a trivial matter and does not concern them should visit the Menin Gate in Ypres there are over 60,000 names of every nationality in the world (except Germans)of people who died with no remains being found and only a few kilometers away in Tyne cot cemetery there are over 60,000 well tended graves a visit to Fields of Flanders Museum and looking at the Holograms and displays is truly life changing as is the American war graves sit at Omaha beach 15,000
graves perfectly aligned in every direction the last post there is truly moving and emotional as id the nightly parade of bands to the Menin Gate Registers of all the dead are freely available at most War grave sites in France & Belgium and prove an illuminating read

As tragic and disgusting as the slaughter of over 6 million jews was the Chinese call WW2 the 37/45 war as over 10 million Chinese died by Japanese hands and all is forgotten
I did an excellent tour of WW1 battlefields and cemeteries in 2014 with one of my grandsons ( now a teacher, historian, & author). A most interesting and moving experience. The evening ceremony at Menin Gate, Ypres really makes the hairs on your neck tingle, it is quite amazing how much detritus of WW1 remains in France & Belgium, and in fact still being revealed today. Lest we forget!

When working in Shanghai in 2009 we had a lady Documentation Manager who was born in Nanjing (Nanking of old) a city which suffered greatly under Japanese occupation. She was Born in 1992 and hated the Japanese with a passion. I can only presume this is handed down from generation to generation.Quote:

I was told that in Japan schools the period of 1939 to 45 does not appear in any history books.
As to war graves, have been to three, one in Thailand near the bridge over the river, the second in South Korea, and one in Vietnam.
Any one who is not moved when viewing either has no feelings or compassion.
I have seen grown men cry when viewing some of the head stones.
Well John, according to the EU, the second world war was a minor skirmish.

I watched an Aussie film (again) last night, the Battle for Lang Tan. the battle to place in Vietnam in August 1966, no heroics, just troopers fight for their and their comrades lives.
108 Aussie and New Zealand troops held off over 2000 Vietcong troops..
At one stage running low on ammo the top brass dithered in using helicopter to drop the Ammo, a pilot and his co-pilot made the decision and dropped the ammo.
Outcome was 18 Australian and New Zealand Troops killed, numerous wounded.
The US Government at the time recognised the bravery and awarded the appropriate medals and recognition.
It took the Australian Government 65 years to recognise the bravery of its own troops.
The majority of the troops were 20 or 21 years old and none had been in battle before.
Well worth the watch.
