On the stand by boats nearly all the deck crew the 4 of them were only too willing to Relieve me or the mate on watch. In fact the night the P.A. Blew up if it had happened 10 minutes later I wouldn’t have been there as would have been getting a break by the coxn of the frc and am sure he would have coped. JS

All ships in and out of Port Melbourne must have a pilot on board.
On all cruise ships we have been on we have been able to see the pilot go off, usually from a gun port door of some sort and down the Jacobs.
Time of leaving can vary from a couple of knots from land to as many as 40 depending on the port.

Would have thought the town would be happy, tourists of this kind bring in a fair bit of money to local business.

Forgot to add that most cruise ships don't bother to anchor now as they use the DPS to keep them on station and that would explain the always pristine anchor fleet, but that raises another question do you put up the anchor ball or not?

a 'fleet' is a paint stage width.

A 'paint stage' is a wooden board about 12 -15 feet long by 12" wide, on which us silly buggers had to sit/stand and paint the ships hull whilst try not to fall into the briny

It seems others are reacting to similar situations.
In the news, Venice is intending to charge visitors a fiver for doing their thing. This is due to the City being wrecked by too many people.
Sounds a bit like Khans ULEZ charge, you can only ruin the place if you pay. Why don't they just ban cruise ships from visiting Venice?
I think I know the answer to that one.

I have this one in my collection Ivan. Falling into the briny would be preferable to bouncing off the quay.

Getting back to the Rule of the Road ,or better known for some obscure reason as the Articles , during my time I had to learn two different sets , fortunately when they were again tampered with I did not learn them parrot fashion as was finished with examinations on such. I rather think there were 28 in the first lot and 32 in the second which I did learn to repeat and put in the commas and punctuation marks , the first lot learned included a one on fishing vessels off the coast of Korea was. Considered by most the hardest to recite as contained tri coloured lanterns and their different angles of visibility. The second lot included seaplanes on the water , but for some reason left out or I can’t remember them , fishing vessels off the coast of Korea ? Anyone with a better memory than me remember ?
The Korean fishing vessels were either Rule 9 or Rule 15 the two longest at the time. That’s where the word Articles came from remember now ,the Rules were called Article 12 3 etc. JS

The hook is often used when not possible to dock.
Many ports only shuttle service.
As to rust on them, some are in a bad way.
