I was on a 'P" boat Paparoa way back in 64. We had 8 passengers aboard who ate and slept in their cabins. Had a steward to care for them but we never once caught sight of them.

My father, Michael John O'Brien was on Rangitane in 1954. He passed away in 1965. Records I have found have link him with leaving Auckland in 1954 on board RMNZS arriving in Southhampton on 2/8/54, possibly travelling with two acquaintances Brian Adamson and Christoper Wright. I would love contact with anyone familiar with his name or remember him. For me it would be great to have some sort of social history as I know little about my fathers life.

Brigette you already have one post under the title Rangitane, best just to keep to just that one thread or otherwise you may miss some information, it also helps our volunteer researchers if they only have the one thread to concentrate on and also helps you collate any forthcoming information. Hello all! I joined the "Rangitiki" as a ship's writer in 1953 (straight from 2 years National Service in the army) and also met my wife to be whilst at sea. Loved the "Tiki" whose skipper was Captain A E Lettington OBE DFC (he got the DFC as a member of the Royal Flying Corps in WW1). What a happy ship it was. During one southbound trip someone thought it would be a good plan to run a boxing tournament for the entertainment of the 1st class passengers - in a fit of insanity I entered but got hammered in 3 rounds by one of the laundry men called Mike - cannot recall his surname but he was a really good bloke. Some shipmates at that time were Bill Bravery (Hospital Attendant), Terry Pocock (Assistant Purser), Mike Turner (Writer), Pam Moody (Children's Nurse), Doc Cunningham (Ship's Doctor), Frank Wrack (Hairdresser), Mick Overall (Chef) - quite a few more whose names escape me. Mind you it was quite a big crew (around 127 I think). I came ashore in 1957 when I got married and worked in Liverpool for the NZSCo loading brokers for quite a long time.

I met my wife on the " Northern Star ", I was Inter 2nd.Engineer and she was sharing an eight berth cabin with seven other Kiwi girls on their way to the UK for the big tour. We are celebrating our Golden Wedding today !!! and not a moments regrets ! Peter in NZ.

Hi Peter.
Congratulations to you and your wife on your Golden wedding anniversary. We have similar paths ,I met my wife on the Southern Cross when we were emigrating to NZ 60 years ago in May, we celebrate every day, and i wouldn't change one of them.

I think I sailed with you on that trip, I was a lift boy then, new boy first trip. If I remember rightly you had blondish hair, then the second steward was a smallish gent with glasses who loved his cigars.
